Won't start when engine cold or stalled.

I'm having starting problems with my 2005 T30 for last few months.
I replaced Cam and Crank sensors when I bought the car and it was running great until
I got snowed under in Tasmanian Highlands during cold snap in March (freak weather).
Could not start car that freezing morning, eventually it did.
Ever since that time I have problems with starting.
When engine is cold it will start then revs will drop and engine stops.
It won't start after that for few minutes and then I need to keep my foot on accelerator
to keep revs up and then its OK.
Have the same problem when I stall the car accidentally (manual). It won't start straight away but in few minutes it starts and runs as normal.
Went to mechanic for service, he replaced both Cam and Crank sensors again and reset EPU.
Next day I had the same problems again with starting.
Really don't know what it could be, car is still at mechanics.
Definitively related to sensor or programming issue because apart from that it runs beautifully.
Hope someone can come up with some solution.

Re: Won't start when engine cold or stalled.

Tough one, its a petrol 2.5 is it?

An engine that stalls a lot is often the throttle body dirty, once cleaned and basic parameters set in the ECU it re-learns the correct idle.

It sounds as if the engine ECU isn't getting the correct signals to tell it what temperature it is and to 'turn on choke' as it would be in the oldern days'

Could it really be as simple as the water temperature sender that tells the ecu how cold or hot the engine is so it knows when to richen up the mixture? If the ecu is told the wrong info i.e its not being told its cold then that is a possible line of investigation...

Good luck!
Martyn

Thanks Martyn,
Car still in the workshop but mechanic thinks he found the problem.
Test start tomorrow morning when engine is cold.
I really hope he did.

Forgot to add earlier.
When engine stalls and cannot be restarted right away, there was no spark on
spark plugs. Few minutes later car starts like nothing happened.
Another thing is if I turn engine off with car key, it start normally.
Only plays up on cold start and when car is accidentally stalled by
selecting wrong gear (manual).

Re:

No worries,

That extra fault info change everything. If the ECU isn't recording a fault i.e error code when it does this? then the problem probably lies in a mechanical related part that happens to be electric, think ignition electrical switch, the starter inhibitor on the shifter stick, possibly even brake pedal switch.

Good luck, feed back what happens! this one is intriguing!

Re: Won't start when engine cold or stalled.

Our mechanic had a shot but problem still there.
Good bloke didn't charge us a cent.
Once car starts cold with a bit of accelerator help it runs great.
After that starts every time when turned off with a key.
Dream to drive since last service.

Anyway, Exy is booked for airbag recall soon so will get Nissan to have a look at it
while there.
Hope they can come up with something.

Thats a shame, well I wish you good luck with the dealer finding the fault for you. One thing to share with them that is prety important I think was what you said: "When engine stalls and cannot be restarted right away, there was no spark on spark plugs."

No spark at the plugs when stalled, thats pretty key...
Good luck,
Martyn

Re:

Hi I have the same problem. X-Trail 2.2 dci 100kW diesel 2006th
Nissan Dealer diagnostic tested when the engine is cold, it changed before starting the engine temperature sensor value + 1Celsius- voila engine runs beautifully and does not die any more. But this is not the solution. Nissan dealer says that the ECU is faulty and needs to change, but I do not believe it. A temperature sensor is exchanged, and diagnostic procedures, and shows the correct values. I think that is wrong with the drive chain or a crankshaft sensor which is stretched out of sync with the chain. I shall continue ....

sorry my bad english
