Re:
Chris.
Have a look at this site.
It's called radio-code.com and they find codes for all makes and models in most countries.

Re:
Hey X-Trailers,
just letting you know that I rang the number posted earlier (1800 035 035 - thanks Muzza). I was greeted with four options that didn't seem to make any sense to me, so I pressed zero (secret-squirrel non-existent menu option) and it was answered by a no-nonsense lady who went from zero to pin number in about 1 second after I finished reading my VIN.
I suspect, thanks to production line bulk-manufacturing minimum cost foo, that they don't generate a random non-sequential pin for each car that comes off the line, so reading your VIN number is probably akin to saying "I have an x-trail" and they give you the pin number that matches all x-trails from the same year / month / colour / whatever.
anyhoo, TL;DR is that the pin retrieval still works from that number.
thanks

Re:
Yes mate, that's why the need the VIN, it's unique and it is the reason it's being referred to as the "vehicle identification number"
That number is the standard Nissan customer service line, not only for PIN retrievals, but for complaints too.

Re: HOWTO: entering the radio's PIN and recovering from ERR
Hi all,
Just rang my local Nissan dealer and was told that to get my radio PIN (which was not passed on when I bought my X-Trail second hand), I would need to bring the car in, show my rego papers and pay $40! Instead, I followed the advice above and rang 1800 035 035. By trial and error I found that the required menu option is now 2, not 0, and got the PIN in 10 seconds, as well as instructions on keying it in.
Thanks to all, and especially to iaindb for the promise that a 'no nonsense lady' existed out there somewhere. Also, to the lady!
