Re: X trail won't start - Update: Piston rings and timing chain issues
How many kms has the engine done and what oil are you using ?
The standard 5W-30 oil used by the dealers is great for fuel economy but as the engines get older they use oil because of the wear and our hydraulic timing chain tensioners need high oil pressure to stop the chain being too loose at high RPMs, possibly skipping teeth, so a higher grade 5W-40 oil will help with that.

Yes the 5W-40 will help the hydraulic timing chain tensioner in the higher RPMs

Re: X trail won't start - Update: Piston rings and timing chain issues
I take it that you have the Check Engine light on then ?
Does the engine sound like it wants to start or just like the starter motor is turning it over ?
Does it turn over fast or slow ?
Have you checked the spark plugs to make sure you are making spark ?
Is the fuel pump pumping fuel ?

Re:
So we've now taken the car to an auto-electrician as it still won't go.
The car simply stopped in my garage, no check engine lights, no rough performance, nothing out of the ordinary except needing a jump start a week prior.
At the moment the mechanic has
-Changed the crankshaft, camshaft and throttle position sensors (originally getting crank/cam shaft error codes)
-Replaced the timing chain (had apparently skipped 2 teeth)
-Machined the heads and replaced the piston rings etc (there was low compression in a couple of the cylinders and the piston rings were seized/grimed up)
-manually checked the voltage across a whole bunch of wires... all of them are correct so far
Aside from that, things like the fuel pump, spark etc have been checked multiple times and seem to be fine. I'm not sure what error codes, if any, are being displayed at the moment.
The starter motor is turning over and trying to do it's thing, but the engine simply won't start.
Hopefully the auto-electrician will deliver some positive news in the coming days when he gets a chance to have a look.

Re: X trail won't start - Update: Piston rings and timing chain issues
I'm wondering from all that if the spark plugs have had their leads plugged back on in the correct order ?
