I'm slightly confused here.... nananut, you're asking about a hd clutch for your t31, yes? And Tony, you're referring to Dave's signature with a 2004(T30) exy? Am I missing something here?

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

Hi, I'm new to this site and I wanted to share some pricing and advice about refitting a SMF or a DMF to a T31 Petrol (07). Sorry if this isnt the right place to post - this is my first post.

Yesterday I was quoted $2409 fully fitted for a factory quality dual mass replacement (incl tax, parts, labour) by Shire Clutch and Brake at Taren point (9540-5504)

Hes been specialising in this work for 40 years - my mechanic said hes the best price, honest, very experienced. He knew all the issues and I asked him about from this site.

He advised not to fit an SMF to these cars. He won't do DMF to SMF conversions anymore - he'll only refit quality DMF's. He said hes had too many people complain about the side effects - shuddering/vibrating while accelerating, noise etc and he was aware of problems caused to drivetrains because these cars were engineered for DMF's, not SMF's. He said the DMF's only get damaged and overheated if driven after a worn clutch starts to slip. He seemed to indicate that this is the real issue.

Now here's the interesting part - he said there isn't any BAD DMF kits for XTRAILS - they are all good quality and he said there isn't a great deal of difference in the price between SMF conversion and DMF replacement.

I budgeted for a repacement clutch/DMF just in case. I rang Exedy in Qld and they said they have no issues with their SMF conversion kits for Xtrails ( part number NSK 7966 SMF for my car). The guy at Shire Clutch and Brake laughed at that this.

I rang Weldon Brake and Clutch and they priced the Exedy NSK 7966 SMF conversion kit at $1850.00 But I cant remember if that includes GST.

Hope this info might be of value to someone. (hope I'm not in the sh*t for posting these business names).

cheers

Re:

Hey guys, my clutch finally started to give out at 197,000Km (we bought it at 55,000 so must have been at least 140K on it). Towing and driving up steep hills became probleatic.

Anyway my local guy wanted $2200 for an SMF refit, so i got in touch with Glenn Corkill down at North Richmond on the advice given here... and i got it done for 1300 or so which was great. Done in a day and quite professionally.

Just have to get used to driving it again, the SMF you have to drive properly and not just mash the clutch, it should hopefully become easier as it loosens up over the next few weeks anyway.

Going down this path now... trying to decide whether to stick with the OEM Exedy or go with ACS.

The mechanic I spoke to said Exedy wouldn't be releasing crap... I guess I've gotten 95,000kms out of my T31 DMF... which coped some serious abuse.

Time to start getting quotes... but for the price @ Shire Clutch, I'm tempted to drive up to Sydney as previous quotes/estimates were > $3k.

Re:

Finally got a new DMF clutch installed. I love it emoticon I can drive around roundabouts in 3rd gear again... I struggled going in 1st sometimes.

Mechanic advised the flywheel was definitely the problem.

Ended up going with a SACHS kit, which promises to be a bit more stronger than the Nissan OEM (which is technically an Exedy clutch).

Not a cheap job (clutch was $2k alone). ended paying $4k for 10h labour, 100k service, machining of all rotors, and all new filters that were pretty caked up with dirt/dust, and all new fluids (brake, oil, trans, diff) car drives like a dream now.

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

First of all i have to thank everyone for this thread now on page 19.

I'm new to the forum , had a serious clutch burn out on a track near yepoon ,and although a number of 4x4s with all the gear shook there heads in disbleaf emoticon and said if its any consolation we dont know how i made it to where i got to because they struggled and had to use a number of attempts but it cost me dearly with the clutch, yuk it smelt for about two weeks emoticon , anyway now about 4 mounts later the dual fly wheel was rattling and clunking so i took it upon myself to fix it myself as it is a 2002 2.5.and not worth a $3000 quote i had here on the gold coast.

After a huge effort to lift the engine and gearbox out i was left with the front plate of the flywheel that had spun over the bolts that support the rear flywheel plate to the motor. so there was no way to spin it back , i even tried bashing it back to its original position but still couldn't get enough clearance .It had ceased there.

The angle grinder to the rescue! emoticon and a serious amount of sparks later cutting off the support rivets and with my friendly crowbar finally got the front plate separated from the rear one. In the old days we would call this some gentle persuasion. emoticon So that finally i could remove the bolts supporting the flywheel. one bolt ceased and took some of the thread out with it so also a bit of a retap will be necessary on that one. emoticon

I must admit this would have cost me quit a bit more from a mechanic ,so even though its been a struggle i'm glad , well at least my pocket is glad that i did take this on myself.

Thanks to the info on this thread i will go for the solid flywheel and hd clutch , prices so far have been from $1950, from repco down to autobarns $760 but i think the clutch from auto barn is a standard clutch as all the other prices were also. I will have to double check tomorrow.

My question is has anyone found a clutch and flywheel cheaper than $760 from autobarn.
really appreciate any leads
all the best to you all Tony.

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

Well parts have finally arrived , they look good emoticon , i know this is a silly question but which way do i mount the clutch to the fly wheel?. flat side to the flywheel or vis versa , also does anyone know the tension on flywheel bolts and clutch plate? Appreciate the reply as i once changed a clutch in an opal 2005 and got it wrong , man was that a load of work, don't want to go though that again. emoticon
