Re: Wheel Bearings
Was talking with the CBC rep at work today, he tells me that they are supplying front and rear wheel bearings for T31 to Nissan and can also supply over the counter.

Re: Wheel Bearings
Morning all,
First post so shall briefly introduce myself, I am a mechanical engineer working in Dalby, QLD, and have just purchased an '04 X-Trail ST auto.
Unfortunately, when I test drove the vehicle in brisbane suburbia, I didn't get it going fast enough to notice the drone coming from the front wheels.... still, I got it for a very good price so I'm still happy with it, but I am currently planning wheel bearing replacement for this weekend.
Having read the workshop manual fairly thoroughly, I am confident I can do it all, although my only hesitation is that I don't have a press at home and am planning on making do with a combination of clamps, drifts, mallets, bearing puller, slide hammer, blow torch and freezer!
I have installed diff bearings without a press before, so i'm hoping to have the same success with these wheel bearings.
Tell me, am I dreaming?
Ultimately, if I can't do what is required at home, I will be able to take the parts to work and use a press there, but ideally I would get it all done by myself.
Thanks in advance, Matt

Re: Wheel Bearings
Hi Matt,
Check the information posted on Page 2 of this thread. You do require a press for the wheel bearings.
What you're suggesting could work, but it might be easier to just have the correct tools when starting this job.

Re: Wheel Bearings
So I completed the job over the weekend, and I guess things went as smoothly as can be expected!
I don't know why Nissan specify so many different drifts/supports etc. as I used the same 3.5" piece of pipe to support the knuckle when pressing out the old bearings as pressing in the new one, although I did have to turn it down a bit on the lathe to be sure it wouldn't jam into the back of the knuckle when pressing the new bearing.
Also I took a suggestion to use the old bearing as the drift to press in the new, but also turned that down a bit so it didn't get stuck in. The standard drift on the end of press could be used directly to press out the old bearing, and the same for pressing the new bearing onto the hub, which was fortunate, as I had made the drift specified and it didnt fit!
Someone on here had mentioned that they had a hard time getting the inner race off the hub. I think this is a case of having the right tools for the job. I used a bearing separator and they both came off no trouble at all.
The only difficulty I encountered, was that the driver side shock absorber was slightly long, and so even with everything apart, it was a tough job compressing the shock enough to get it back onto the steering knuckle and the drive shaft CV boot copped a bit of a flogging in the process (not enough to puncture it fortunately).
Hope this helps someone in the future
Matt
