I can't really comment on the qld legality aspect as we have the new legislation here in nsw. But if you already have the lift, then you can fit 235/70/16 but you'll need to adjust the front inside section of the front wheel wells to avoid scrubbing on full lock. As long as you don't have an aggressive tread with deep, chunky tread lugs, you shouldn't have any issues with clearance or scrubbing like I did. Keep in mind you will lose a bit of power and increase your stopping distance, and you should definitely consider the majority use of your vehicle before going down this path, but IMO it's worth the added clearance and the LT option. I've absolutely punished my tyres on and offroad and usually run at 10-12psi on sand so I can vouch for the added strength and rigidity of the LT construction. As Tony mentioned above, if you've got any questions feel free to PM me.

Ben,

i spoke with ACT RTA, and was told that they wouldn't accept an xtrail as a 4WD. Their sticking point was no low-range, therefore not off road specific vehicle. I wonder if that would mean whether a Forester would be a 4WD lol.

Its basically to stop mad mud tyres on Honda CRVs and the like. I can also understand the tyre size issues, after realising how sh*t the x-trails brakes were... I cooked my rotors in <10,000km after putting on 235/70/16's coming down the the Kings Hwy in Sth NSW.

YMMV with QLD, but I'm just hoping ACT adopts the 7% rule later this year... then straight to D697s

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

Hi Guys, no clearance issues after 2000 ks it was as I said just the nipples rubbing on full lock, much more grip now they are gone too. Getting a bit quieter too.

Remember Augustus has upgraded brakes and shocks, no way would I do this on the stock brakes, these take much more effort to pull up.

Been getting a lot either weird or envious looks, heard one guy mutter under his breath at the servo, "yellow wheels, what are they on" I replied "an X Trail mate" he looked shocked as he thought I didn't hear him, LOL.

But seriously I love em and will miss them. As the new Augustus is going to be White, so now gunna be Orange wheels and orange bits! That is until the first major rebuild, LOL, already planing it. Then he is either going the same yellow as the wheels "Yes Big Yellow Taxi Jalal" or a nice orange, and not the new X Trail one either. Although I'd seriously consider the Electric Blue and Yellow again, looks grouse, and the missus is rather pissed we couldn't get the same colour again! Although I know why they dropped it, all the Electric blue ones I've seen have had major paint issues. I mean I've seen early t30s with much better paint.

He might be sold to, had a serious offer for the right money, guy wants wheels as well as bash plates, so look out Jalal were comin' back for more.

I know many of you have had illegal tyres fitted before, and a lot of tyre places don't give a damn, just want the sale. But Bob Jane would not fit these a couple of months back and now their updated computer say's yes, so those in states other than Vic go ask. Can't hurt.

Loving them though the gearing is bloody tall. Very first thing once the new Augustus comes out of warranty is lower gearing. I have found a place capable of making them and making them tough. still to be finalized in price but looking around 1k all up, going 10-15% lower, or 10% and giving it a lower 1st gear so it's a crawler.

Hope everyone had a great easter and say gday to ya EXY for me emoticon

Thanks Michael for your input, but what does YMMV stand for?

I'm not looking to upgrade by brake system to DBA slotted rotors and Bendex 4WD pads. Has anyone got the same upgrade and can shed some light on the part numbers? I went into Supercheap Auto on the weekend hoping to pick them up for 20% off but the young bloke behind the counter couldn't find it in his computer for the XTrail.

Next I'll be looking for an exhaust upgrade to help assist the new big tyres. Unsure whether to include headers/extractors at this point cuz I don't think many have done it to their T31 Manual Petol.

Thanks Augustus for your thoughts. I'm thinking that so long as they don't scrub on the way home from Brisbane (although fully loaded with the seats down n basket on the roof filled & towing a large box trailer with everything but the kitchen sink) then I should be right. Unless of course they do at full lock then I will avoid it like the plague for the moment until I get it home and can do some ... Touch ups :-)

I really can't wait to fit my 697s. We use them on a lot of mine vehicles at work and so I see first hand how well they do off-road and without much tyre wear.

Thanks all, I'll let you know Saturday night how everything is going on the trip home.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

Hi Ben, I have priced the DBA T2 rotors at Supercheap before, however I got them through my local ARB dealer as he was a lot cheaper, in fact including fitting was only 5% dearer than Supercheap for parts only.

If you do fit bigger tyres you must upgrade the brakes.

Hi Tech Mufflers will do you extractors, and they will in combo with the full system make more torque and KW.

Depending on budget, I'd fit coil on plug ignition system or a MSD ignition system. big gains to be made with either of these.

If you know a mechanic who works for reasonable rates, lift the head, send it to G&P engine reconditioners in MIldura VIC and let them port it for torque and off road use, do a three angle valve grind and have seals replaced, then get them to mill it to the factory limit for increased compression. Now If times an issue just get a secondhand head an reco that. Huge gains to be made by lifting compression and a good valve seat and port job.

G&P really know their stuff and I won't let anyone else do my heads unless I do them myself.

A good intake is easy on these, lots of members have done them.

I'd also replace the water pump with a Davies Craig electric unit. Less drag and allows the water to circulate after engine shutdown with either a thermostat controller or a simple timer.

Yes these mods cost but will give you a good head start and lots of usable torque off & on road. They will also increase the longevity of the engine.

I hope not too many mods are required, ours are not scrubbing any more just needed a few klicks on them, but I will be looking hard after the lift on the new Augustus as to how much more room can be made, as I have had wheel well clog before and it brings you to complete stop real quick, no matter what tyres you are using.

Hope some or all of this helps, look forward to hearing about what you decide to do, any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Have a great day

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

Hi Augustus,

Sounds as though I should just buy your first XTrail then :-)

Just curious, still for sale?

Fitted 235/70R16 Dueller AT 697s this morning. 48mm increase from OME and now the Speedo reads spot on according to GPS :-) I haven't detected any scrubbing (although I haven't specifically done full lock) even with my Exy being used as a semi-trailer today :-(

Was at Supercheap today and DBA2316s rotors were $254 pair (including delivery).
While Bendix 4WD pads DB1946 were $90 pair (including delivery).

Upgrade to cat back system will be my next main mod, and I can always get the rest of the full system made up later when more money falls off the tree ;-) 99% chance to order through Hi-Tech but not sure where to fit as I live in Mt Isa and everything costs an arm and a leg and a few good organs too.

What is "coil on plug ignition system or a MSD ignition system. big gains to be made with either of these."?

As for the rest of the playing with the Engine I think that might be a lil too excessive for what I need. Ideally I'm looking to upgrade my 4x2 Hilux to a Prado (needing 7 seats soon) with the Exy as our second car.

I could really use some power gains though, as I'm fully loaded inside/on roof/with trailer (challenge anyone to do better) and I'm flat out (foot to floor) trying to achieve 110km/hr. And acceleration is nada (remembering I'm Petrol version so no Turbo). Just out of curiosity, while towing on sealed roads in good weather conditions the Exy can be left in 2WD right? More power to other wheels would increase fuel consumption too?

Currently, fuel consumption is 15L/100km (which the display is supported by accurately manually calculating distance covered with Google Maps divided by fuel added at next stop) travelling at an average speed of 100km/hr. I decided to put in 95 Octane Fuel (instead of regular 91 Octane) hoping it might gain me some distance through better fuel economy but I don't think it's helping (nor did it last time from memory) and at an extra 6c/L may be unjustifiable.

Achieved 550km today, got 1,350km starting at 5am tomorrow.

Cheers for everyone's comments, especially the detailed response from Augustus.

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

Just an update after my epic trip from Brisbane to Isa carrying everything but the kitchen sink.

Haven't detected any scrubbing since unloaded on the new larger tyres.

I won't be able to determine the economy on the bigger tyres until we do another road trip. I'm a lil unsure how "better" the results will be only because the speedo will now read accurate. So basically I will just have to see how far I travel over a long distance to Brisbane and compare it to my previous recordings :-)

I dropped back to normal 91 Octane fuel as I believe I was getting better fuel economy and couldn't justify the actual 10c difference! I don't know whether going through some towns had more hills but from half way I decided to do 110kmh which was flat out but I believe I was getting an extra 30-50kmh according to the "time to next fill" number on the dash.

Any questions on the tyres I bought, feel free to pm me :-)

Sorry I got a lil off topic.

Cheers,
Ben

Re:

Im looking to do a tyre and coil lift.
I have a spare set of alloy nissan stagea rims which fit, clear all the important stuff, and have slightly less offset by 5 -10mm. I have s1 factory 17s. the stagea rims are 225 50 16.
im trying to do this thrifty as an exercise so just disregard legalities and rim ratings etc and just go with it...
im finding a lot of a/t tyres 2nd hand in 225/75/16. I think this is the std size for pajeros or something. when they go mud they roll these off.
appears the "largest" successful mud tyre is ian's 235 70 16 s. the 225 75s have an overall increase in diameter of 4mm but less width. im sure the extra offset (towards the wheel arch) will be helpful for full lock clearence. the 225s on there had enough "swing".
coil lift is not done yet. from an ascetic pov itz tyres first. these will not be for std commuting as the factory tyres are still 80%.
can anyone see any glaring issues? if this all works I will invest in sunrasias but no point in spending $$$ of adventurous soft roading is not for me...

Yeah I did look at that, but with my wheels (+20 offset), I scrub that outer wheel arch enough as is, so the 10mm width difference wouldn't have been worth the 4mm height increase, as instead of scrubbing on the plastic arch, my tyre would have been biting into the metal fender above it. If your wheel offset is closer to standard then you might just avoid that issue entirely? I was told by tyre shops that 225/75/16 is a standard hilux size, which would certainly explain why it's so much more common and thus easier to source different brands and types of tyre. Good luck with whatever you decide to do mate. I'm all for supporting those who choose to push the envelope emoticon

FYI: King Wheels version of sunraysias were $120 per wheel when I bought them 2+yrs ago, they have to be specifically ordered in due to the uncommon stud pattern. Also, at the time, the only offsets they came in that were remotely close to the xtrail's were +18 or +28. I ordered 28 but through a stuffup ended up getting the 18, was too impatient at that point after 4+ months of research etc that I just kept the +18's.
 emoticon emoticon
