Choice of X-Trail or Grand Cherokee Petrol Auto ?

I have a choice to make, I need to buy in the next few months another 4x4/SUV with an auto transmission. I have sustained damage to my knees and longer journeys in a manual just get too much. As we run a manual Xy the closest I have found that is next level up is going to be a Jeep Grand Cherokee !

So after a lot of digging around I think it would be a WJ 4.0 Lt inline (2004). I am aware the Merc 2.7 engine has issues according to some, but have not ruled it out on MPG grounds.

The alternative is a 2.5 petrol Nissan X-Trail (2005/6ish). I do not want anything with a DPF if at all possible. I run a T30 2.2 which is pre DPF model.

My main need is load space and useage as dailey driver. It will go off road, from "weekend warrior" to three weeks on forest trails. Snow and flooded roads being the other issue in winter as well as touring.

The GC has a big boot, though little storage space in spare wheel area. The main down side seem to be mileage return, and the odd problems with engines in particular 2.7 CRD.

The Xy has masses of space as I know. It may need a lift for the heavier off roading where as the GC won't. I am not aware of any major issues with the 2.5 engine or auto box ?

Any thoughts or experiences on either ?

The 2005/06 Auto petrol Xtrail would come with the CVT Auto which have had problems in the past but could either be covered by warranty if problems did arise or may have already been replaced by the original owner under warranty.

As an alternative, if the manual gearbox in your current Xtrail is your only concern have you looked into replacing it with an Auto gearbox from a vehicle in a wrecking yard ?
With yours being a diesel then the Auto which came with that is the traditional type of gearbox and not a CVT.

Go the Jeep, but dig deep for fuel.
Those in line 4.0's are pretty thirsty, but then again have a bucket of torque and are bullet proof.

Re:

Mate I'd go the Jeep. Tonnes more available with aftermarket sources for parts and upgrades etc; does the GC have low range? Could look into extractors and an exhaust, maybe even lpg with it being a petrol etc if you're worried about fuel economy. I drove the 4.7L V8 back when I was learning to drive and boy was it fun haha (was manual though). Good luck with your choice!

As always thanks for your input...

Yes the GC has a full low range box and Quadratrac four wheel drive system. WJJeeps.com Has a lot of info as well as the forums of course. The 4.0 is slightly better than 4.7 on repair grounds. The down side is age I guess. The WJ was the last of the "proper Jeeps" as far as most US forum posters/owners are concerned. It is well proven off road and parts a still reasonably easy to come.

Our Xy has 154,ooo miles on the clock and the only engine mod is the EGR is unplugged as I am not currently able to pull the bloody thing out and clean it. I have done a lot of other work on it, and before I needed an auto I had plans to work a small lift similar to FinnGhost to keep the old supple springs. I would would consider a car a couple of years younger, but would not see much point in swapping an auto box if I can get a car with half the mileage on it.

I think I will have to go drive Jeep and auto Xy, before I make mind up...

 I've owned 3 Cherokees (4.0L, 3.7L, and 2.8L diesel) and 2 X-Trails (2.5L T30 and 2.5L T31) - I think it depends on your use of the vehicle.

Quote: "My main need is load space and useage as dailey driver. It will go off road, from "weekend warrior" to three weeks on forest trails. Snow and flooded roads being the other issue in winter as well as touring."

The GC has more boot space, better approach & departure angles, better clearance, and more power.

The X-Trail has better fuel economy and (in my view) a better transmission system if you get the CVT.

Acceleration times are (surprisingly) much the same for both (comparing Jeep automatic transmission with Nissan CVT automatic transmission).

It sounds as if the "daily driver" need would be better met by the X-Trail, and if the "off road" need is principally for unsurfaced trails rather than anything more challenging then the X-Trail would handle these with no problem. If however your "off road" needs are more demanding and you want more power/weight ratio then the Jeep is the better bet.
