posticon Vibrations after tow bar installed today...help

Hi All,

This is my first post and hoping you guys/gals may be able to shed some light for me.
Today I had a haymen reese tow bar fitted to my 2011 Xtrail CVT. I am now noticing a slight shudder/vibration through the vehicle (easily felt by putting a hand on the handbrake lever) when accerating away slowly, seems to be most obvious abut 1500rpm. I have checked the tow tongue is secure (locking bolt/nuts tightened well) so don't think its that. Thanks for any help emoticon

cheers
Blair

Hi Blair,

I can't see how a towbar can be the cause of such vibration. Can you please describe the vibration you're feeling in a bit more detail?

I would tend to agree, but the fact it is occurring just today (after the tow bar fitting) is too much of a coincidence.

It difficult to explain other than low audible and slight shuddering/vibrations that can be felt through the vehicle for a second or two as it passes through 1500rpm.

It only occurs while driving, and not while revving in neutral.

Is there anyway the wiring could interfere with CVT somehow? Causing a glitch in the transmission at this low rpm?

Re:

The only thing I can think of is that they could have touched and/or bent one of the exhaust heat shields under the car and it is sending the vibration through the car with the engine revving, so get is up on ramps and check the metal heat shields to make sure they're not touching anything. Otherwise, drive it back to the towbar place and get them to check it out for you.

Check the hole through the rear bumper is clear of the tow bar. Also check the rear bumper is not loose or rubbing on something (it would have been removed during installation).

It's not rubbing on the inside of the bumper bar is it?

Re: Vibrations after tow bar installed today...help

Thanks for the ideas, much appreciated.

Well i took it back to place where I got the tow bar fitted and basically they dismissed my claim, saying nothing they would have done could have caused such a noise. Anyway, i convinced the guy to jump in the car and go for quick drive with me to at least have listen. He did agree there was a abnormal noise/vibration but couldn't explain it.

So i drove home and had a look underneath myself. Sure enough, there was a section of alumunium heat shield that was bent/crumpled/push in and was touching the exhaust. I bent it back out to what i thought the orignal postion should be, not touching. No more noise! So fingers crossed this was the issue......

Is it possible that when they put the car up on the hoist they have bent this shield up by not positioning the hoist carefully? This particular section of heat shield sits fairly proud and would certainly bend in before the weight of the vehicle is taken up elsewhere by the looks. Couple of pics after I bent it back out:

Absolutely a hoist can do that.
