T31 Itelligent Key and Remote System
My 2012 xTrail Ti T31, recently purchased from the First Owner, has a Factory Build Date of 1/04/2012. It has the Intelligent Key System (Type A) as shown on page 3-2 of the Owners Manual. Unbeknown to the First Owner, the vehicle was supplied with incorrectly cut (wrong Key Code) Mechanical Keys that would not operate the Door Lock or Ignition Lock. I found this out the hard way, when I tried to open the Door when the vehicle battery was too flat to operate the Locks. The keys would not turn the Lock mechanism. Apart from being able to obtain the correct Nissan Key Code from the Dealer, I have little luck at all in the area of a Warranty rectification, unless I want to pay big dollars, like, $600, $395, & $195 after haggling. Armed with the correct Nissan Key Code, I had my locksmith cut me two keys ($19) that will open the Door Lock. However, neither the originals or the newly cut keys will Unlock the Ignition Switch, in the absence of the Remote Control Electronic Signal.
Can someone with the same vintage vehicle, please try to use the Mechanical Key hidden in the Remote, to Unlock their Ignition Switch, with the Remote Control is at least 5 or more meters away from the vehicle and advise me of their findings. My locksmith can provide no better answers than I can, about this later system.
I am not able to obtain absolute answers from the Dealer, as to; a) When must a Key be used for the Ignition Switch. b) Which Key is required to be used. c) Is it a Special Key, one which is Coded differently to the Door Key. The original keys do not appear to be programmable and the locksmith agrees. They just have a plain black plastic head and no evidence of any chip.
I ask these questions because, if for any reason the Remote is not able to transmit a signal to the Ignition system, (like flat Remote Battery & no Signal) a Key of some sort, would be required to operate the Ignition Switch, to start the engine.
I acknowledge and have read a lot of info published on this forum about Key Systems, but much of it is for systems prior to this vehicle build, that are of a different design.

Re:
I never tested my key for my Series 4 Ti, so it was an interesting test this morning
I can confirm the key unlocks the doors and when inserted into the ignition key slot it turns the ignition on with the remote not being present at all.

Re:
I also hope the first owner gave you 2 sets of remotes because it cost over $900 bucks to replace one of these.

Re: T31 Itelligent Key and Remote System
I don't understand. If the original owner was given the wrong keys which don't open the door or work in the ignition, how did he drive the vehicle?
Neither of my factory keys have a number engraved in them. The reference to "smart key" refers to the remote being detected and conversing with the engine management system, but the key should still start the vehicle in case the remote has a flat battery.
This might be the easiest solution.

Re:
That's not the same key the Ti and TL owners have. Your key is not the same as the one we are talking about which slots into the back of the remote fob.
It looks like THIS and based on the information of this listing it does indeed have a chip in it.
This is the remote.
