Replacement engine for 2004 Ti XTrail

Hi. Looking for advice re replacement motor for 2004 Ti X Trail.

Dropped our other X Trail in for a 130,000 service at the local Nissan dealer service centre and to check out excessive oil use and excessive smoke from exhaust. After a few chats with service guys was told the engine is dead, car was not drivable and choices were to replace engine with recon or second hand or have an engine rebuild.

I have used this dealership for over 5 years for both X Trails I own without problems. So guess I have to trust what they are telling me. I expect to get more detail re what "the engine is dead" means shortly.

Does anyone know of good place or options to get 2nd hand or recon motor in Brisbane preferably on south side and what sort of cost is involved. Is recon better than 2nd hand?

Also what sort of kilometres would be reasonable for 2nd hand motor.

Any help appreciated

More details from the dealer. Recommendation is to replace engine with recon engine with about the same kms - 130,000 for around $6000. Sounds a bit high to me. Advice from the dealer is the motor has been run dry of oil and as a result oil is getting from crankcase to combustion area and burning. Hence loss of oil and excessive smoke from exhaust.

When leaving the service manage took me aside and said replacement could be done for around $2500 and possible $100 extras for water pump, gaskets etc. But would have to do this with a mechanic not the dealership.

So will get a couple of quotes and see what other opinions are.

Any thoughts on reputable repairers in Brisbane or advice from local members appreciated.

Second hand engines cost around $2000 +/- I replaced mine about 2 years ago when I got the Box. I think there's a wrecker on the GC that does a lot of nissan bits it could be worth calling them for a price. From what I read here it's the butterfly screws on the throttle body falling out and scoring the bore that starts the whole issue with oil use then the big end bearings fail when they run dry and viola! new engine time... I miss my GQ emoticon

Re:

If it was me, i guess id be asking some further questions. Not knowing the history of the problem, its kind of hard to give advise on the correct course of action.

You said that you had excessive oil use and smoke - was this something that you picked up yourself, or did the service department advise you of it? If you picked it up yourself, and didn't get it seen to straight away without ensuring the correct amount of oil was in the system, then yes their diagnosis is probably correct.

If they picked it up and simply told you about it, without explaining to you that it will need regular oil top ups, and running it low could damage the engine, then some questions of the service department need to be asked.

As far as what to do, i guess the question is if you intend to keep the vehicle or not, give the age of it (10 years old) If you intend on keeping it, and not just for the short term, then i would absolutely suggest a reconditioned engine from a reputable supplier I.E NOT HM GEM, and using a reputable mechanic to install it for you, along with having the radiator flushed/rodded/checked, new hoses and belts etc. - If the Dealer needs to take some responsibility then i would be asking them to contribute to the cost. (Supply of parts etc)

If you don't intend on keeping it, i would be looking seriously at a low km second hand engine, and also getting that done at a reputable mechanic, with the same caveats above, radiator, hoses, belts etc, and then on selling the vehicle reasonably soon.

$6000 seems way to steep to me.

Oh gees, I had that same problem, you know what it was!!!

The friggen catalytic converter had fallen apart, crap gets sucked back in motor and stuffed the rings. emoticon

I bought a whole damaged TI xtrail (for $2700) and swapped the motor and all the TI extras.
