Eonon Head Unit for T 31 (project)

Have been spending some time on this amazing Forum (especially the kitchen sink thread).

I have decided to upgrade the standard sound system in my 2009 T31 X Trail. I was going to go for a straight audio upgrade (with something like an Alpine CDE-W235EBT). Then I began reading and the wish list got longer and longer.

It makes sense to incorporate options like rear camera which is not too much of a stretch but then to add GPS but the price tag starts to climb dramatically (from the known brands).

I have seen posts from equipment from Brash's and Eonon and although I am a bit dubious the sheer weight of dollars in itself is very tempting. I am leaning toward the Eonon brand.

Subsequent web based research on the whole indicate that overall these units look and work favourably and that apart form some of the earlier versions they are very reliable. I have contacted Eonon to make sure the unit that I eventually select is correct - something like the following GM 5168 or C1310B

If you have had any experience, good or bad with Eonon could I ask your advice please. I am getting ready to order a unit in the next few days. Once decided I will keep you updated on progress (if that is ok?)

Regards
Glenn

Having heard nothing either positive or negative I bit the bullet and placed an order with Eonon via the website yesterday. The unit that I selected is the GM 5618 here.

Keep checking this thread if you are interested in the progress!

Re: Eonon Head Unit for T 31 (project)

Hi Glenn, I bought the Eonon C1310B, after reading the kitchen sink thread when I bought my Xy. When I bought my Xy 2009, the demo unit had a cheapie the dealer did not want to quote me on but sent me to their installer who showed me the Eclipse which seemed better, but they could not tell me about map updates.
So now several years later I have been looking again. The C1310B has DAB and camera, and I added Aus maps . I ordered it last Friday night and it arrived Wednesday this week. I needed to get an adaptor for the double din cables to Nissan, Aerpro part no APP091. You should not need this. Hoping to fit it this weekend.

Thanks Mike,

I contacted them and they said that the C1310B would not fit. I am guessing that was because of the direct cable connection (hence your adaptor). Not sure if the part that you bought APP091 has the special antenna port connector. I had a quick look on the web and could not see it!

Good luck with the install.

Glenn

Re: Eonon Head Unit for T 31 (project)

So this taking longer than planned. I did need the antennae adaptor Aerpro PN APA69 but after searching every Superceap, Autbarn Repco I tried JB Hifi where their expert car audio guy kept dashing off to answer phones and speak to everyone he came back and despite me not really understanding what he said he sold me a Stinger STBAA36 which was the same thing.
Nissan have weird ideas. There is no earth on the T31 plug picture posted by Jalal from the manual, so I soldered a wire from the antennae earth to the black wire on the adaptor. Strange to run earth via the aerial.
Home life interfered but I got the basic install done. GPS works great, CD DVD player great. Blue tooth works with my iPhone 4S better than any other in that the phone book reliably opens. Too dark for camera install, so tomorrow arvo the rest happens. Or not 😉
Did not mention but because I do a lot of waiting in the car for various reasons and it was all inside my $600 budget with the GPS maps on a card I got a Digital TV receiver as well. The windscreen will have 3 antennas on it, 2 TV and DAB.
Thanks for alerting me to the antennae adaptor last night Glenn, so I could find the part number for what I needed.

Re: Eonon Head Unit for T 31 (project)

So far I have everything installed and working, apart from the reverse camera and TV receiver. Only had a few hours before the light was gone today. There are some minor positioning issues I will sort out, the flap below does not open without snagging but I think I can get it to work. The 7" display is nice. I did not get the DVD to work because I am not sure if it is looking for a positive or earth on the line ( a message comes up to say do not drive with the DVD) but I wanted to test it.
The radio comes with a cable that the iPod or iPhone plugs into, so need to make some cut outs, probably in the drawer below the radio as I see on the rear it looks as if the USB connector is made to fit.
GPS works great, still learning the features, it takes a minute or two to load, similar time as my Garmin. It has a view of the satellites received which I like.
DAB, awesome, now I can listen to JJJ unearthed JJ and all the other streaming radio stations
This is a very impressive unit, can't wait until it is completely installed. I am looking at getting the tpms as well after I am happy with it all.

Hi Mike,

Great work - I have ordered mine and the tracking says it is on its way (what ever that means). I am wondering how I will mount the reversing camera just been looking today also how to pick up the reverse detector wire. Any pointers as you go would be grateful.

Thanks again for the report on your progress.

Glenn

The unit arrived this morning - in and working in about an hour. Direct plug replacement, antenna as well. Even the steering wheel controls seem to function correctly.

GPS antenna mounted top left hand corner of front window (not sure how to stick to glass yet?)

DVD, DNLA, GPS and radio all seem to function. I think the bracket may be a little off, the unit could probably come forward about 5 mm).

Bluetooth seems to function.

Have taken photos but will continue with the camera installation when time permits.

So far so good!

Re: Eonon Head Unit for T 31 (project)

Glenn, I have mounted the camera on the drivers side of the handle by drilling 2 small holes in the bottom. This is the recommended area for the camera in the instructions.
The cable however is run from the unit to the passenger side back by unclipping the plastic covers front and back at the bottom of the door openings. I used a thin rod fed from back to front and taped the wires to it to pull them through.

I must figure out how to remove the inside facia on passenger side to run the cable from the back floor up to the door cable feed rubber thingy at the hinge to the back door. I chose the right side because I did not want to drill a hole in the metal for the cable. Camera power I will connect to the back outlet in the back on passenger side.

The reverse gear pickup cable feed to the head unit in the same cable as the signal with RCA plug. The GPS antennae being magnetic is on the top of the head unit in the dash and works fine there.

This weekend which is already filling up with plans,
I need to find a reverse pickup for the camera
A pickup for DVD and TV to stop video to the screen when driving labeled BRAKE
I will cut holes in the back of the draw below the radio for the iPod plug and USB
Need a connect to the lights on for Illum wire, to switch on LEDs in switches and dim display

DAB struggles in Brisbane but I believe this is common unless an upgrade to antennae is done or a second booster fitted. ( reception drops out 5 or 8 times depending on 25 km route taken to work.

The more I use this unit the more I like it. Very good value

Re: Eonon Head Unit for T 31 (project)

Sounds like we are in similar territory!

I mounted the camera on the rear (just to the right of the button to lift the tail gate) I chose there because it is closest to the grommet through the tail gate. Of course I had to remove the tailgate trim, I have some pictures that I will post in the DYI section!

Power came from the lighter socket in the rear on the passenger side. and the video cable run under the door sills all the way along to the passenger foot well.

The cables are not long enough (the way that I ran them anyway) I had to join the power and reverse pick up (behind the trim in the tailgate) and up front will have to extend the video and reverse wire (again) from the passenger foot well to the head unit.

Now to find a reverse wire. I have searched this thread and others and the closest that I can find is the following:

"One tip for those contemplating this mod (thanks to Jalal's great memory) is that the reverse light wire is a blue/white wire contained in the jungle of wires in the wiring loom directly underneath the jack compartment."

I have three options to consider here - 1) to find a wire in or near the foot well and connect direct to the head unit, 2) find a wire in or near the wheel well or 3) connect to the wire on the back of the actual reversing light.

If would love someone to say this is the wire and this is where it is??

Pictures to come!

Glenn
