How do you use or have mod'ed the L/H cargo drawer area?

For those that do not have a L/H cargo drawer. I am wondering what mods anyone has built into the left hand side cargo drawer area or just how you use it differently.

Currently I am using the area to store a golf umbrella and used beach towels.

I find that mine will take the hunting carbines quite neatly, but not the target rifles with their longer barrels.

Also the plug-in step attachment to the tow bar fits in there perfectly when not in use.

Otherwise, I find it a good place to shove the frozen goods from the supermarket as that space is supremely well insulated.

We put all the glass xmas present in there. Usually i have 2 cheap camping chairs for those random occasions at parties (we have proper ones for camping). Yeah... umbrella sounds good.

I made a drawer from black coreflute board - it is really cheap, super tough (beats cardboard) and the best solution for a cheap drawer.

it cuts easy along straight lines, creases perfectly for folding, but superglue doesn't work well - you can use staples, 2 sided tape and hotmelt glue. Staples also indent nicely into the material so they can't scrape - I ran a black sharpie over the staples and you can't notice them.

All I could find was the 3mm stuff - It works fine (and I reckon the thicker stuff would be harder to fold within spec) but I would have preferred the 5mm board - its hard to buy locally.

Bunnings only sell the more common 3mm white stuff ( but you could spray it black - its made for printing and painting).

Tip - start with a thin cardboard template and allow for more material on the sides for folding the edges all the way around the top of the draw - it adds heaps more strength and doesn't look as cheap as an open coreflute edge.

ok, now you can message me back and tell me what a cheap-ass I am for not spending $300 on a Nissan drawer.

Great idea and it has worked well for you.

Kudos for not falling for the $300 ripoff.

My arm is barely long enough to reach into that side if needed so it would be nicer to have it all in front of you with the sliding of a drawer.

I've given a hard eye to some of the more solid fruit trays (thrown away at the Fruit Market), but so far they have not quite fitted.

I had also thought of making a draw or something similar for the left side, right up until I bought my TRED's and realised they fit perfectly emoticon

Currently, my left side permanently houses, TRED's, my 2nd fire extinguisher, panel saw and hatchet with little-to-no movement emoticon

I did what you did and found some pretty close fitting (in terms of width) black cardboard boxes before I made a coreflute drawer. You can get these same low profile boxes from ALDI stores - they are the best ones out there - seems to be a brand they stock - but they slide fwd and backwds. Hell, you might as well buy coreflute sheets big enough to make a draw that goes the whole length of the bay. I reinforced the base for rigidity with another piece of coreflute moulded and glued to the inside. You won't need luck to make one - its the least amount of effort and the lowest cost for the most amount of satisfaction. I'm chuffed with mine.
