Engine Cooking
That's cooking on the engine, as I'm sure many of you already do.
Yesterday I warmed up some pre-cooked lamb souvlaki strips on a roll for lunch while out checking out nature reserves around Corrigin, WA. I remembered a friend used to sit his mini roast and veg on his truck engine while delivering the Sunday Times around country centres. It cooked up a treat by the end of his run. I didn't want to lose my lamb so I just sat it on the hot engine while stopped.
Where's the safest spot to cook something so you won't lose it while on the road?

This reminds of my army days of trying or actually experimenting to fry an egg on the bonnet of a "vehicle" at 46 degrees Celcious in the Arabian desert

That won't cook anything, only warm it.
To cook in an engine bay, wrap the meat , veg or whatever in heavy duty Aluminium foil and fix it over the manifold with tie wire, fencing wire, or similar.
Do NOT use zip ties. They melt.
Treat the engine bay as an oven.
Assume 30- 40 minutes to the kilo for a Roast, depending on traffic.
For longer distances, set the roast behind the block.
Do be aware that using the engine as an oven will make it very attractive to rodents who will find it hard to distinguish between fat drippings and wire insulation.

Thanks Dogtrail. It's a 3 hour drive each way for me so my time's limited and I don't want to be mucking around with extra gear (stove, gas, utensils, probably a table) plus the dirty pans, but a hot meal would be nice and I can just roll up the used foil and stuff it in the rubbish bag. Besides, it has curiosity value which makes it worth having a go just to see what I can do with it. Aren't you curious, Jalal?? Go on, I know you wanna try it.

Yep, next weekend I will be inviting my wife and kids for a BBQ in our driveway and I can only imagine the look on their face when I pop the bonnet up of the Red Bull and have the chairs and table lined-up beside it

I used up to cook up an ammo box full of 6 can chicken, (1 large tin of peeled new potatoes, 1 small tin of sweetcorn, 1 tin of chopped mushrooms, 1 tin of chopped chicken, 1 tin of mixed vegetables, 1 tin of beer) on the exhaust manifold of my old Series3 Land rover while we were in convoy, 2 1/2 hours would cook it up lovely. add a good dollop of gravy granules towards the end to thicken it up if it was too runny, ( or just leave the lid cracked open a bit to let some steam out)
Serve up in a mess tin and half a loaf of bread with a mug of luminous orange tea (NATO standard - Milk two sugars) from the Norwegian Army insulated containers.
Mmmmmmm Proper bush tucker.

On the Non Turbo diesel Landcruiser motor, on top of the inlet manifold was the perfect spot to place toasted sandwiches wrapped in foil that we made up and froze before a trip. 45mins was perfect.
