Road Noise
Hi Again;
Just a quick question from someone new to X Trails.
For the last 20 years I have been driving large brand new saloon cars Commodore, Ford etc.
The road noise in these cars is minimal with only very course roads being unusually noisy.
In my new X Trail (secong hand 2010) I have noticed a higher level of road noise in comparison to the fords and Commodores.
I expected this to some extent, as this is a wagon (hollow and resonating) and because it has virtual truck tyres.
How much road noise is normal?
On smooth roads (non course bitumen surface) there is a minimal rolling noise of chunky tyres on a road surface with a little engine/gearbox tossed in. Probably nearly as quiet as the Commodore or ford, certianly nothing concerning or obtrusive.
But when it hits course road surfaces, or concrete roads it gets a little more obvious (about twice that of fords and Commodores.
One thing that does impress me is that the X Trail handles bumpy roads with less rattles and bumping noises than either the ford or Commodores, even though its nearly 4 years old with 93k on the clock it feels tight, and solid, speed humps dont even make an impression, unlike the ford that feels like the front end is being ripped off.
I have read the post from the enthuastic individual who soundproofed his X Trail and I was thinking that this may be a possibility, but first, your impressions about noise would be appreciated.
Cheers

Re:
Thanks Trans.
Ill check my tyres.
As I have stated, its not intrusive or overly loud, just a bit louder than the ford.
As for quality, the ford is no real gauge to measure quality by.
The first 12 months I had the ford the following issues were found.
Right hand window electric winder stopped working
All window winders replaced
Rear suspension bushes failed (has been done twice since)
Seat backing started to come away from the seat (no one has ever sat in the back seat)
Windscreen wiper motor failed
Computer replaced due to intermittent rough idle (now it just pulses when you sit at the lights, makes my wife car sick if we sit too long)
Car hesitates and surges first thing each morning, takes about 2 klm to get normal non surging driving.
conditions
Drivers seat suspension collapsed (I weigh 120 kg, all my previous cars have never collapsed), this has never been fixed.
brakes pulse even afetr several re-machining (goes good for a few weeks then back to pulsing)
getting into the car requires me to slide my foot under the brake pedal, which is too close to the floor with my work boots on, then bend over sliding my bum in and twisting myself into the seat, while bumping my head.
Getting out is similar, and usually results in my foot getting caught under the brake pedal.
Sitting in the car (and Id like to see the person they modelled the seating off) My feet have to be virtually straight out in front of me, this makes my knees ache.
If I try to bend them, they hit the steering wheel or have to be twisted to the side which makes my ankles ache.
Over all the Ford is the worst car I have ever driven and I have had a lot of cars over the years.
My daughters Yaris is more roomy and comfortable to sit in.
My X trail is a dream
Slide in, slide out, sit with knees bent comfortably.
Nice firm comfortable seat.
Ford got lazy and expected idiots to buy them because they were "Australian" what a load of rubbish.
They had the ability to compete, but they were lazy and smug, good riddance.
