Road Noise

Hi Again;

Just a quick question from someone new to X Trails.
For the last 20 years I have been driving large brand new saloon cars Commodore, Ford etc.
The road noise in these cars is minimal with only very course roads being unusually noisy.

In my new X Trail (secong hand 2010) I have noticed a higher level of road noise in comparison to the fords and Commodores.
I expected this to some extent, as this is a wagon (hollow and resonating) and because it has virtual truck tyres.

How much road noise is normal?

On smooth roads (non course bitumen surface) there is a minimal rolling noise of chunky tyres on a road surface with a little engine/gearbox tossed in. Probably nearly as quiet as the Commodore or ford, certianly nothing concerning or obtrusive.
But when it hits course road surfaces, or concrete roads it gets a little more obvious (about twice that of fords and Commodores.

One thing that does impress me is that the X Trail handles bumpy roads with less rattles and bumping noises than either the ford or Commodores, even though its nearly 4 years old with 93k on the clock it feels tight, and solid, speed humps dont even make an impression, unlike the ford that feels like the front end is being ripped off.

I have read the post from the enthuastic individual who soundproofed his X Trail and I was thinking that this may be a possibility, but first, your impressions about noise would be appreciated.

Cheers

Re:

i cant say much for the newer models but i do find there is considerable road noise in my T30. i drive country and city roads on a daily basis and the country roads although are in fairly good condition, the rough road does have me reaching for the volume on the stereo to drown the noise out

im all for sound deadening, its certainly on my to do list. i think the doors (especially in the T30) are where i seem to hear alot of the road noise along with the rear tailgate.

just my 2c

Cheers

Re: Road Noise

First thing I would check is tyre pressures - Recommended is 33psi front and 30psi rear.

Any higher and noise and harshness increase in my experience.

If your tyres are All Terrain of some sort then they are heavier than original tyres and also probably will probably be noisier or more rumbly as the tread wears (rotate AT's every 5000kms).

My previous car was a Holden Calais and I would say the T31 X-Trail (ST-L) is as smooth and quiet and all round a better quality vehicle (which surprised me).

It has longer travel suspension and front and rear suspensions are mounted on sub-chassis frames to isolate road noises.

Tyres play a big role in quietness or otherwise. In my previous cars some tyres literally transformed comfort out of sight.

Re:

Thanks Trans.
Ill check my tyres.
As I have stated, its not intrusive or overly loud, just a bit louder than the ford.
As for quality, the ford is no real gauge to measure quality by.
The first 12 months I had the ford the following issues were found.
Right hand window electric winder stopped working
All window winders replaced
Rear suspension bushes failed (has been done twice since)
Seat backing started to come away from the seat (no one has ever sat in the back seat)
Windscreen wiper motor failed
Computer replaced due to intermittent rough idle (now it just pulses when you sit at the lights, makes my wife car sick if we sit too long)
Car hesitates and surges first thing each morning, takes about 2 klm to get normal non surging driving.
conditions
Drivers seat suspension collapsed (I weigh 120 kg, all my previous cars have never collapsed), this has never been fixed.
brakes pulse even afetr several re-machining (goes good for a few weeks then back to pulsing)

getting into the car requires me to slide my foot under the brake pedal, which is too close to the floor with my work boots on, then bend over sliding my bum in and twisting myself into the seat, while bumping my head.
Getting out is similar, and usually results in my foot getting caught under the brake pedal.
Sitting in the car (and Id like to see the person they modelled the seating off) My feet have to be virtually straight out in front of me, this makes my knees ache.
If I try to bend them, they hit the steering wheel or have to be twisted to the side which makes my ankles ache.
Over all the Ford is the worst car I have ever driven and I have had a lot of cars over the years.
My daughters Yaris is more roomy and comfortable to sit in.
My X trail is a dream
Slide in, slide out, sit with knees bent comfortably.
Nice firm comfortable seat.

Ford got lazy and expected idiots to buy them because they were "Australian" what a load of rubbish.
They had the ability to compete, but they were lazy and smug, good riddance.

Re: Road Noise

A Friend who was researching buying a Magna 380 a few years ago spoke an Engineer at a Quality Auto Manufacturer in Australia. The Engineer said that Toyota and Nissan were the top makers followed closely by Mitsubishi. Way down was GMH and at the bottom was Ford - literally the Cunninghams Warehouse in build quality.

I love my X-Trail for the same reasons you give. Fords can be beautifully engineered but the build is abysmal only improving recently in areas you can "see".

End of rant about things not X-Trail.

Be aware that the Australian X-Trails have 90kgs more metal to strengthen them for local conditions so as a potential offroad car they are more "Industrial Strength" than your regular sedans. As a balance between city driving comfort and eg parking ease to offroad ability they are a brilliant solution. Very capable in all sorts of offroad situations but very comfortable around town.

Given all this it is no surprise the X-Trail is "Different" to a sedan in subtle ways.

Re:

This explains why it tows the boat soooooo much better and feels more solid on the road
Driving to work yesterday, with the correct tyre pressures ( thanks) it was a little more quiet
A friend at work who also ownes an exy said that mine was about the same as his
Im getting more and more fond of the car
I travel 85 k a day each way to work on the M1(F3) at highway speeds
110 on my gps for 60 of those klm is no problem, at about 2200 rpm
I can hear conversations in the back, or the radio at quite a low volune now
Perhaps later Ill research quieter tyres, its only for towing the boat, not for off road
Thanks again for setting my mind at ease

What tyres are on your car and how much tread is left.

Re:

sorry for the late reply, I have been getting ready to go overseas

They are Goodyear 215/65R 16 98H WRG

There is about half life left, about 30k as they have already done 30k and the previous tyres were replaced at 60k.

I figure about 12 months and Ill get some new ones.

Cheers

Re: Road Noise

If they are Goodyear DURATRAC wrg then they are commercial grade all terrain truck tyres !!!! and will be noisier than regular passenger tyres but will probably last much longer.

If you aren't going offroad or just rarely, when the time comes, I would put Yokohama Geolandar SUV HT G055 225/65 17 (it's one size wider ie 225 cf 215) as they are same construction and just as tough as Geolander all terrain but with a highway pattern.

They will/should be much quieter and probably won't get rumbly like chunky pattern all terrains. They are still a heavy tyre and regular passenger car tyres will be noticeably better handled by the suspension due to their lightness. Quite sufficient if you don't go offroad at all.

I noticed the increased weight of the all terrains straight away when they where fitted as the car Jumped a little on pot holes etc as the the wheel/tyre combo (unsprung weight) had more inertia.

cheers

Re:

Ill put that little gem in my book for when they need replacement.

Its like when I had my Valkyrie bike.
I kept putting on the same tyre that was supplied with the bike initially.
Then one day they didnt have that tyre and I had to get something else.
Being a rather rare bike, tyres were difficult to get at the best of times, but the new tyre (I cant think of it now), was so far superior to the old tyres that it was off the scale.
All those years of riding with less than the best tyres..............
