Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
Sam, simple answer is that your vehichle is roughly 5 yrs old with 135k on the clock & things can break/wear out etc. Had this issue with my 2012 model from new. It was an issue with a bad batch of butterfly valves. There is a how to thread about cleaning the EGR. Maybe have a go at doing that. It also give you a chance to see if there's something else wrong with it.

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
Reason you have never seen the DPF light is that you highway driving is perfect for regenerating the DPF. It's very likely that the reason you have both lights on now is that your EGR valve is clogged. Give is a clean and hopefully it will come good.

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
Get the codes cleared would be the first thing to try. If your highway driving as much as you say it seems unlikely that the DPF would not be regenerating. How clogged up was the EGR valve when you cleaned it?

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
If the DPF is clogged then I would think the DPF light would be on.

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
I tend to agree with Toddyh in that I would have thought that if there were a fault with the DPF it would have illuminated the DPF light.
Might be worth getting a second opinion on the fault.
Another thought is that Wynns actually markets a DPF Cleaner and regenerator product.
Read about the product at http://www.autoproducts.com.au/dieselparticulatefilter.html
Some fairly positive reviews of this product are at http://reviews.halfords.com/4028/325222/reviews.htm
Note that it is a professional product so you might need to pick it up from a Wynns distributor. Look for one at http://www.wynnspro.com.au/distributor-locator

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
just got back, put on 1200km since my last post 1100 of it highway, no dpf light, but still mil light... i've ordered my own obd2 tool so hopefully i'll be able to read and clear this code myself and maybe i'll be able to read the pressure sensor differential ?? don't know if it'll be supported,
((( i was talking to another fitter who works on equipment and he remembered at time where the one he was working on (caterpillar) pressure differential said the dpf was full, even though it wasn't and he had to clean the the build up getting to the sensors, and with that caterpillar it wouldn't go into doing a particulate burn due to sensors saying dpf was full)))
so I was planning on going down that route to make sure the sensor's clean enough(and tubes)
to get a good reading,... even change out the sensor is a more viable option than the dpf to
start. I was also trying to find the electrical schematic for that circuit in the electronic service manual, but so far i can only find the pictorial of the parts layout, but not the schematic,
I don't know my way around that manual that well.
I'm going to find a buy some of that dpf cleaner you mentioned exywarrior it could very well
help clean the sensor's reading as well too.
if i can't get anywhere with the codes i'll have to try and take it elsewhere to get a second opinion
