Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

I am going to fit the Provent - somewhere deep in this thread I was skeptical about it but the standard oil separator is simply not doing its job. I will also take off the intercooler and won't be surprised to find it full of oil.

However back to the question posed at the start of this thread - what is the rasping metallic noise that I can hear under like deacceleration during gear changes? It has come back on my vehicle after the EGR clean and the new charge air (turbo to cooler) hose.

It's nothing to worry about. Just the turbo spooling down. It was really clear on mine because of the snorkel.
As for the provent, I'm selling my old one ready to bolt on if you want to save some $$. Not sure what postage to Perth would be. Check the for sale section if you're interested. I definitely recommend fitting one either way though.

Hello!
My air filtre was also stained with oil. I mounted a catch-can and the problem disappeared.
All the best!

Just back from the 10,000k service. Complained about oil on the air filter element. Was told "it's normal for these cars".

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Hi All,

The dreaded warning light appeared on my T31 diesel at almost exactly 60000km emoticon

I took it to Lander Nissan (Sydney) today and:

- They immediately told me that they will fix the problem under warranty emoticon
- They did a software upgrade today,
- They will replace the EGR - the part(s) will be in next week.

In answer to my questions they told me:

- This has been a common and known problem on most modern diesel engines
- The EGR they will fit is an improved version to the original
- They do not expect that the problem will re-occur with the newer EGR.

After reading the above 60+ pages I was worried, but Lander accepted this as a warranty issue and will fix it so hats off to them! Great service.

And by-the-way, we have only had the car about two months and we love it!

Hi Bill,
You have posted what I believe is the first positive story in this EGR issue. Which Lander outlet are you dealing with? I'm with Lander Blacktown who only 4 weeks ago told me that the oily airfilter is normal. Could it be that they wait for an actual incident (the light comes on) before they can do anything constructive?

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Hi 58phil,

The Lander Blacktown dealership has its service department a few km away at Prospect, and this is the dealer I went to (in fact I first went to Blacktown assuming that the service department was there, they sent me to Prospect).

I did not ask about the air filter, I will when I get the EGR valve replaced this week and let you know. Mine has the typical oily marks, the filter is 10,000km old.

My guess is that they do something when the light comes on. It also seems that, after initially not recognising this issue 2008 onwards, Nissan/Renault have acccepted it and have upgraded the design of the valve. That's what I hope, anyway! I guess that is reasonable for a car manufacturer.

Anyway I will keep you posted when I get the repair done.

Another thing, the software upgrade seems to have had a positive effect on the engine performance. Nissan did this free of charge, although the car is (just) inside the 3 year warranty.

Be very interesting to see how the improved EGR valve differs from the original.

Problem is I don't think it is the 'fault' of the valve per se, but the design and control of the complete EGR including the EGR cooling circuit.

That's right, exactly the same thing I did! At the moment the manager at Lander is supposedly talking to Nissan about the oily filter and the lack of customer service I received about the out of date maps. We'll see if anything comes of his involvement, and with your permission I might show him this thread.
