Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code
Glad you found it helpful. You will probably find that the entire intake manifold is caked with sludge. You will need to clean this at some point. It's a pain to get to around 2-3 of the 8 bolts holding the intake manifold to the engine.
As for oil on the air filter, you want this thread. To summarise for you, the easiest fix is to install a provent or another oil/air separator. There is a really good install guide here.

Re: Re:
I believe it will unless its an error that is still present. I used ScanTool to plug into the OBD and manually reset the MIL. After a couple of dealer visits where they charge $80-90 for a very simple procedure, I bought one and it also helped me keep a log of the number of times I had to reset. My story is I cleaned out the EGR, intercooler etc twice and the MIL would reappear intermittently and each time the EGR clogged up.

Re:
Amec, I think you'd certainly be better trying to get the DPF cleaned out first. You might take a look at Western Filters who claim to have some pretty whizz-bang technology to do this...
www.dpfcleaning.com.au/
I'd also take a closer look at your car's driving cycle because it needs to be able to get above 70kmh - without interruptions - for at least 20 minutes every few days to achieve a full DPF regeneration.
Is the MIL light error code for the DPF or the EGR valve? Two completely different problems. If you don't know this answer then it might be worth finding out as the EGR valves can generate P0488 error if not functioning correctly. My EGR valve was found to be defective from new and it was replaced with a modified version that has given me no problems in over 40,000km and an examination of it shows it is still quite clean. I drive 100km/day at 80-100km/h all the way.
Lastly - are you using the correct engine oil? The one thing that will wreck a DPF quicker than anything else is to use anything other than a fully synthetic engine oil that has "suitable for DPFs" written on it.
And I've been surprised how many mechanics don't seem to know the importance of this.
Good luck with the repair. If it comes to having to replace the DPF I'd try looking on the internet at overseas parts providers...I've certainly seen them for less than $3500.
