posticon 4WD doesn't kick in on sand, but does up on blocks.

Hi all,
took the x trail for it's first beach run a while back. On the approach, stopped, put it in 4WD auto, got the motion going and got up and over the entry hit the beach and dug in.
After a bit of digging and back and forwarding, got m'lady out to watch the rear wheels, no spin. Lucky I had mates at the other end to get me out which was a bit of sweating as it was (being a 40 degree day).
Took it to the shop during the next week, t hey put it up on the blocks, all four wheels spun.
       Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers, Tony.

Re:

Just because you didn't see the rear tyres spinning, doesn't mean that 4wd is not working. Depending on how you got stuck and what mode you were in.
Were you in Auto or Lock?

Like Ian asked, Did you air down before driving on sand?

My suggestion is to put it in LOCK through soft entry sections and switch to auto once you reach firmer ground.

Re: 4WD doesn't kick in on sand, but does up on blocks.

Hi gents,
I hadn't let the tyres down on entry, I was a bit gung ho after reading posts on people not having trouble on skinnys, and I didn't check the entry either. Newb's mistake.

I had 4WD set to LOCK, and the the lights were on on the dash.

After I dug in on the other side of the entry, I dug the tyres out and let them down to 20 psi. Started up again and checked it was in 4WD (can't remember if it was in LOCK), dug in again.

I can not recall if I had it in AUTO or LOCK when the better half was watching the rears.

Sounds like I might have to dish out on those new tyres I wanted, and head back down to the beach (with a mate who has the 'pull your buddy outta trouble kit') and give it another crack.

When I have it in LOCK, can I just flick it back to AUTO on the fly or do I have to stop?
And what about vice versa for when I spot a soft spot coming up?

Thanks for your replies.
Cheers, Tony.

I don't know what beach you are talking about but around here we usually run tyres at about 12psi. Makes a huge difference. 20psi is not very low at all.
You can change between auto and lock on the fly just make sure you are doing less than 40km/h.

4WD Lock is not a good idea for sand.

You MUST switch off ESP (switch by right drivers knee and indicator symbol lights on dash)

After engine off repeat above as ESP resets to on.

4WD Auto is great.

If you have low profile tyres then 24psi is probably as low as I would go.

20-25km/h is a good speed to go over soft sand.

Never got bogged with the above and much sand was soft and churned up.

This needs a qualifier. Not a good idea to use LOCK for extended periods. Is a very good idea to use it through the softest sections or climbing dunes.

I agree with Todd^^^^^^^^

Lock is great in soft sections and for climbing up dunes. But if you drive around for long peroids the 4wd system can overheat.
