Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

Mine had some similar symptoms. Feels like a loss of power on take off. It's the DMF moving too much and sapping your power. Once fully engaged it was fine.

Mine rattled at idle with the clutch pedal up (engaged) and stopped when I pressed the pedal fully.

It shouldn't have anything to do with the accelerator. If the rattle changes with revs I would start looking at things like your tensioner pulley and AC compressor.

Tony,
Nothing so far, I'll be driving it a fair bit this weekend, so I'll listen out and let you know.

**UPDATE**

Absolutely no noise or vibration on idle from the new clutch. If any Western Sydney members are looking at a similar replacement, let me know and I'll give you the mechanic's details.

I'll be in Sydney in 2 wks mate, wouldn't mind your Mechanic's details please.
I've been quoted 'round $3k with my local Brake n Clutch bloke emoticon

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

Hi Bob,
The mechanic I used was Glenn Corkill Mechanical Repairs in North Richmond. He's done a few before so his price was accurate, not a wild guess like some of the quotes I got.

Look him up on Google, best of luck mate.

Grant

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

Ended up getting the clutch replaced for $1900 closer to home from a mech who'd done a few before - included gearbox and transfer oil changes. Replaced with HD SM
Have only travelled up here to Sydney with it so far. Performing much better, better response (but then, so would a DM lol).
Clutch takes up almost immediately. Just a touch harder than other clutches I've used over the years, but this is the the 1st HD clutch I've used in a car, so can't say if normal or not emoticon
No vibration...as yet, will give it a few more months and another camp trip into the bush towing my CUB before saying for sure emoticon

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

Wow!! 18 pages about clutches. After reading some of your stories I don't feel so bad that my clutch has lasted to 205,000km.
I had a a small problem shortly after I got the car back in about 2005 when I tried to turn around where there was a mound & I had a burning smell but no problem since.
Until about October last year on a 4WD club trip where I had problems getting up a hill. There was no clutch slipping but it seemed like I was in 3rd gear & had no power.
Now over the last month I have noticed the revs suddenly increase if I change gear going round a corner on dirt & if I plant the foot to get past someone or when changing gear sometimes. SO it looks like I am up for a couple of thousand bucks.
At least I know what to ask for at the clutch repair place now after all your stories.
Will keep you posted.

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

Had the clutch replaced with a HD unit & had a solid flywheel fitted as well for $1900.
It certainly has quite a bit more bite now. I stalled it trying to leave the mechanics place, & will have to relearn how to drive it smoothly.

If I read this thread correctly, there is no heavy duty clutch for the T31.

Re:

No there isn't nananut, but the main problem in our t31 is the Dual Mass Flywheel, not actually the clutch itself. A few pages back Todd has posted the details of a mob in SA who sell the SMF, so if you're up for a replacement clutch, I'd go the SMF conversion while you're at it so you're not back at square one waiting for your new clutch to eventually die again. I haven't had too many issues with mine just yet (and I'm not too kind to it) but when mine finally gives up the ghost I'll be hunting down the SMF conversion kit for my T31 too.
