Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

That is my original hose. It is wrapped in steel 'wire' reinforcement. The new one is also wrapped although slightly differently (wrapping is closer together).

Hmmm - mine hasn't any reinforcement (even internally).

What year model is your mate's ?
Yours is 2008 and Todd's 2010 so maybe they changed the hoses between models.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

Yes - his is 2010 too.

They should have picked this up pre-production don't you think, particularly given the development period and testing they put these engines to.

2008 vintage Santa Fe had the reinforced hoses, so I think they would have known.

I am beginning to wonder if I have been losing boost and hence running richer for sometime leading to premature clogging of the EGR? I did notice many moons ago the front attachment point of the hose would slip back a few mm's and I tightened the clamp. But a small leak particularly under load is hard to hear and the only telltale might be some oily residue around the leak - this is under the airintake plastic feeder tubing so not visible.

John

Re:

So I have a quick question being what's the average k's travelled before the first clean.. I ask as I haven't had any of the symptoms mentioned before and I'm up to 90,000k's! We travel from Brisbane to the Gold Coast quite regularly but also travel at under 2000 rpm quite regularly in the city. I don't push Rex very hard in the city and try not to exceed 2050rpm on the highway cause I feel Rex needs another gear!

As I'm not too confident in taking off the EGR, does anyone know where you can get this done? Or is there someone on here willing to help out in Brisbane? I relish in payment via the beer economy!!!

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

I did my first clean at 38,000km and have done it twice since. I am now up to 70,000km.
I don't know if anyone in Brissy has had a go at the clean yet. Follow the instructions on the first page of this thread and it's fairly straightforward. You will need a decent socket set with extensions.

Re: Re:

You could start with the aerosol can method first which simply requires removing the intercooler hose on the LHS where it comes up to the throttle body/boost sensor/EGR valve assembly and spraying right into the manifold, leaving for a while to dissolve and then running the engine.

Would use any good throttle body cleaner - doesn't have to be EGR specific.

I think Todd did the right thing in starting this cleaning process early in the life of his vehicle as it is not mentioned in any Nissan servicing schedule.

Re:

Yeah I've ordered a new intercooler so I'll do this at the same time when I have my F-I-L helping out... I took Rex for a spin this arvo and noted that it revved right the way through the rev range range quite nicely up to 4000... No issues there, no flat spots.. Does this indicate that the EGR sensor may be clean-ish?

Do not spray a throttle body or carby cleaner directly into the intake. The stuff can damage sensor, plastics etc. Only use it if you dismantle to clean. If you don't want to dismantle the intake and clean then you must use an EGR specific cleaner.

Jeremy, that you have no flat spots doesn't necessarily mean your EGR valve is clean. Only way to know for sure would be to have a look.
