Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Also been a while for me too...greetings to you all.

Work just took delivery of a 2012 X-Trail and it has a towbar fitted. So as soon as I spotted it I checked out the bumper alignment and it is perfectly square with gaps both sides the same and the gap under rear door the same all the way along.

I arrange to get it for 30 minutes so I could run my snake camera around to see if anything was obviously different. I can't see anything obvious but the reversing lights appear to have sufficient clearance and this would be possible if the bar was slightly higher. (talking only 5 mm)

I thought I had the Nissan number for my towbar somewhere but will need to get the camera in to see if I can see it.

The new vehicle towbar has the following details...

NISSAN G91623U000AU 1 and NP-2003-0151

Even if the towbar was modified they may use the same numbers but if anybody knows the numbers on the towbars fitted to the X-Trails from 2009 to 2011 then it may tell us something.

***Update***
My towbar has the following...
G9162-JG000AU and from what I can make out the part number is the same. So based on this the towbar may be updated.

Excuse my ignorance but is the 2012 X-Trail still classified as a T31 or a different model? It is the model with the LED tail lights.

From what I can see the bumper looks the same so if anything there may be a slight modification to the towbar.

I will be contacting my Nissan Dealer to ask if his team are now able to fit the towbars without having a bumper misalignment and if so what is different.

Regards

John

Hi John,

Thanks for the update.

The part number is exactly the same, it has just been updated to reflect the new part number for the Series 4 and Series 5 T31 models. You would have seen the T31 Series 5 (2012 model)

It is quite possible that the new stock (or manufacturing batch) of Nissan towbars may have been slightly modified to address an earlier issue.

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

I have just contacted the Service Manager at my Nissan Dealer and he requested I send my latest photos and information.

I asked if his technicians were now able to fit a towbar without the misalignment problem and he indicated that they weren't having the misalignment problem.

The photos and information has been forwarded to the Service Manager and he is going to contact Nissan to see if there has been any changes.

After seeing that there was at least a few mm's clearance from the towbar to the reversing light surrounds I believe they either have a modified towbar or a new instruction to allow the towbar to be moved up about 5 mm.

I will provide an update when I get some feedback.

Regards

John

Re:

Hi All,

Just got back from a car service.

My Service Manager confirmed that the new tow bar is different to the original and it had overcome the problem when fitted to the X-Trails.

He suggested we fit a new tow bar while the car is in for the service so based on my earlier observations of the new tow bar on the work vehicle and his confirmation it was fitted. As per my comments in previous posts there is now clearance above the reversing light surrounds and it has balanced gaps around the rear hatch. The right underside gap may still be slightly less than the left side but I believe that it because the bumper has been forced up for the past 3 1/2 years. Once we have some hot weather I think it may come back down.

The new tow bar is definitely a different design and from what I can see has fixed the problem.

It is in the previous posts but to save people looking back, the new tow bar has a serial number of "G91623U000AU 1" and the old serial number was "G9162-JG000AU 1".

I haven't got any photos of the complete tow bars to show the differences other than those taken using my "snake camera" when they were on the vehicle.

Hope this is of assistance.

John

Re:

Based on what I have observed and the information from my Nissan Service Manager I believe that the new towbar has been modified. I would have liked to have the two side by side to see but mine was changed to a new one and now it has clearance around the reversing light surrounds. As mentioned the bumper was still slightly out of shape due to being pushed up for 3.5 years but it is not being forced there now. They had offered to fit a new bumper as well but I felt that a new bumper had to be sprayed locally and sometimes not quite the same as factory.

In my previous posts, the pictures show the original problem of the reversing light surround pressing up against the towbar and with the new towbar there is now clearance.

From what I have seen X-Trails fitted with the new towbar shouldn't have the problem.
