Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

Hi,

Just dropped in my Xy for service with a new place, making the break from the dealer servicing after a few issues.

They wanted to put Dexus2 in and tried to tell me that because it was A3/B3 compliant it would be C3 compliant, which as I understand it just isn't true so I insisted they use a C3 certified oil.

In doing some more research I found this web page http://www.gmdexos.com/licensedbrands/dexos2licensedbrands.html which suggests that Castrol Magnatec Professional and Mobil 1 ESP amongst others are all re-labelled dexos 2.

Does anyone have any light to shed on this, am I reading it wrong?

Re:

Yes the table is rather confusing isn't it.

Castrol Magnatec Diesel in the bottle that looks like THIS would be ok. You will note it is suitable for engines fitted with a DPF and it also says it is ACEA C3 compliant.

Mobil 1 ESP looks like THIS and it too is compliant and suitable for DPF fitted engines.

DEXOS2, as I read it, is a GM oil standard. If in any doubt, you are entitled to ask them for the product data sheet which will give you the details you require.

The items to look for are that it is fully synthetic, is ACEA C3 compatible and will likely have written somewhere "suitable for engines fitted with diesel particulate filters".

Last resort is to use the smartphone on the internet right there and then to get the product datasheet from the OEM website.

You can never be too careful!

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

After another call I spoke to the service manager who said they would put in Dexos 2 euro which is a C3 certified fully synthetic.

I was told that it would cost more than the dexos2 they wanted to put in because it is "fully synthetic"

When I picked the car up they had the spec sheet ready for me to show that it was C3 certified.

I am concerned that they were quite happy to put a non C3 oil into a diesel with a DPF, even though they assured me that "they use it in all the diesels and haven't had any problems with it."

That to me is a fairly bold claim for an issue that would develop over a long period of time and most people wouldn't trace back to the oil, especially when they don't even realise it could be a problem.

Re:

Sounds like you're lucky you rang!

A non-C3 oil would have definitely wrecked the DPF and it would have instantly voided any Nissan warranty (if still in the new car warranty).

Sounds to me like that service centre might be one to avoid.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

Dear diesel Xtrailers, I just looked at the service invoice from today's 10,000k service and it says engine oil Magnatec 10w30. $36.90. Would any of you know if what they have put into my car is correct? I've done a bit of looking and it seems this is a petrol oil? Very confusing all this oil stuff....thanks!

Re:

That seems like an oil that shouldn't be used in a diesel, does it say anywhere on the invoice that it is a 'low ash oil'? The oil should be a DPF friendly oil otherwise things start to clog up very quickly.

I would get on the phone right away and check with the dealer (i would record the phone conversation in case you need it for evidence later)

Don't drive the car at all if possible until you get an answer.

At the top of this page Exywarrior shows a couple of links of what oil should be used.

Thanks Cooch, first thing Monday now. What the bloody hell are these so called "dealers" playing at? The invoice says only "Magnatec 10w30" and the price which seems too cheap...

The oil seems cheap as I paid 41.65 for Magnatec 10w30 for my petrol version at the last Service.
Castrol seems to think it is OK for diesel:

PRODUCT APPLICATION
Castrol Magnatec Professional 10W-30
is formulated for most types of new passenger, 4WD and
light commercial vehicle engines – petrol, diesel or
gas, turbocharged or naturally aspirated, which
are designed to run on lower viscosity fuel efficient engine oils.
Castrol Magnatec Professional 10W-30
complies with the Australian motor industry agreed
phosphorus limits to assist in prolonged catalyst and oxygen sensor life.
Castrol Magnatec Professional 10W-30
is
NOT
recommended for two-stroke engines or for
engines that recommend ACEA, A2, A3,
B2, B3 or B4 classifications oils.

Hopefully you may be OK, or even slightly ahead.

However I do recall another Dealer who was trying to sell a bargain priced Euro-diesel with a brand new motor at 25,000 Km. They had provided the wrong oil at the last Service emoticon

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

That's way too cheap. The low ash oil (Sulphated-Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur content - Low SAPS) should be more like $7/L if you are getting it really cheap. With a 7.2L refill, that's more like $50 minimum. I would be checking the oil they used and also the amount they put it.

If they used Castrol is should have been:
CASTROL VECTON
LONG DRAIN 10W-40 LS
(SUPERSEDES ENDURON LOW SAPS)

or

Castrol Magnatec Professional C3 5W-40 contains a lower level of SAPS, Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur than normal high performance oils. Lower SAPS helps emission control devices like DPF last longer ensuring better engine performance and fuel economy.

Here is the product data for above.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

I gets worse. After I posted the above I went and had a look at the engine. The oil on the stick is as black and as thin as it was before the service! Not able to check the oil filter for signs of removal though. Yesterday I sent a rather terse email to the service manager and am now waiting for his reply. Isn't Magnatec oil green?
