Auto belt tensioner removal

Hi all,

I replaced the serpentine belt on the exxy yesterday as it was in questionable condition. There was also a 1 second squeek each time you started it up. Noise was gone for the first couple of starts however it has returned, but not as loud as before.

I checked the auto tensioner and while its still within the acceptable range on the notches, its outside what a new belt should be.

So I'll be looking at replacing the auto tensioner. Is it a reasonably straight forward job? My hands arent the size of japanese hands so it seems as though it will be a difficult task?

For anyone who has replaced their auto tensioner, is it fairly easy with a socket set?

Re: Auto belt tensioner removal

Hi Terry,

I had my auto tensioner and serpentine belt replaced by a mechanic about 8 months ago because I too was annoyed by the short squeak on start up. To this day it still does it. I'll get him to check it at the next service, but I'm not sure what else can be done.

Re:

if the marks are out it's the belt stretching not the tensioner... the tensioner being bad would lead to a constant squeal as it's not providing enough pressure/tension, a tension gauge can check it. I find once a belt slips that's it, it'll slip for life, sometimes a bit of sandpaper over it can help or there is belt dressing spray stuff that might also help, might not be the belt itself but a bearing e.g. water pump?

I'll let someone else comment on replacing it but check first before shelling out $$$ to fix something that might not be the tensioner

I agree and would be listening to the bearings in the water pump and the alternator first with a stethescope to check.
