Re: Please help with car set up for a longer trip

Best not to use a K&N filter, or any wet-type filter in very dusty environments as they clog quickly and not so easy to clean. The paper filters can just be tapped out.

I would also recommend going on a couple of forum trips on both bush tracks and the beach to experience your car in a group before venturing off on your own, even if you think you will only be "probably not drive on heavy 4wd territory, just unsealed roads plus on whatever will be necessary to get to nice places" as you say.

Re:

Have a few trial camp outs between now and your trip to get a feel of your set up. I've got an ideal spot for my fridge and power pack after a few camp outs. Also figured out how to pack the car better.

good advice by kev. go on a forum event first and learn the exy limits. you don't want to learn the hard way and break something in the middle of nowhere or get stuck in the middle of nowhere and not know how to get yourself out emoticon

Re:

A excellent list there Alan and Marce.

Pretty much all the bits and a whole bunch I forgot to write down. With a few extras that I would never have thought of or discounted but I see the reason for them now (mostly first aid kit contents and a some of the car spares).

You had/have a few more stringent requirements to list your contents due to the locations and places you can stop for repairs.

Re: Please help with car set up for a longer trip

What we took worked out well - we dropped a few things off our original list later (for example we originally took a scanner, to be able to scan things like entry permits, however never used it, and now with iPhone apps which do this with a camera it's no longer useful).

One thing which we chose not to take was a machete: we thought it might be difficult to explain away in a police check in the middle of Sao Paulo or equivalent. When we had to chop up a tree across the "road" in a relatively remote part of northern Argentina we decided that we really needed one (the Leatherman did a great job but took rather longer than would have been the case with a machete). So at the next village we bought one. We now also carry one of these wire saws.

So this is now the current list. We carry the "emergency kit" with us all the time, along with a selection of the other stuff depending on the type of trip we make. For the next "big trip" we will take the lot.

If you're crossing borders it also helps to have the full list available to show customs inspectors. We also prepared a book with photos of the contents of the tool tray and rear drawer (we now have the left hand drawer so this has replaced the home-made tool tray), along with the three kit bags, to illustrate what we have. Usually when the people doing a routine check opened the boot and were faced with what we had they gave up, closed it, and said "OK - on your way". The only place where they wanted to check everything was at a police checkpoint in southern Venezuela, and when we started hauling everything out and they realised that we were not at all bothered, they too gave up.
