Re: T31 Series 5 Nissan Connect

So I can finally comment on using the factory around view monitor with an aftermarket head unit. I finished my audio install this week and I am 99% happy. I installed a pioneer AVIC Nav unit from my previous car along with speaker upgrade, amp and sub install. I was also able to retain steering controls with an Axxess universal steering wheel controller. I will post more details later but now for the around view monitor.

To answer the question "can you retain your around view monitor with aftermarket head unit?"

Well yes and no.

Here is what I have found

The AVM module sends a composite image to the headunit via factory loom so this was easy to splice into an RCA for the aftermarket unit.

The problem lies in the camera AVM positive trigger. The factory loom uses 2 triggers one is a 12 volt which is only activated when the gear is placed in reverse. The other trigger is 6 volt or closer to 5.5 volt which is activated when the camera select button is pushed. The pioneer, and most aftermarket units for that matter require a 12 volt feed to activate the camera input.

If you just want the camera to switch on in reverse, no problems, just use the 12 volt feed, you can even cycle views using the camera select button, however the gear must be in reverse. the 12 volt does not trigger if you just push the camera select button and cycle through views. So therefore you loose the ability to just use the camera view cycle without being in reverse and also loos the ability to see the forward camera.

I tried using a relay and also a transistor setup using the 5.5 volt feed as a trigger to activate a 12 volt feed for the headunit but it just would not trip the relay or activate the transistor.

I did manage a work around, I have installed a separate switch, in one of the blank spaces near the vehicle stability control switch, which switches a 12 volt signal to the aftermarket unit tricking it into thinking that the factory 12 volt trigger is on. You can then place it in reverse or just cycle through the camera views using the camera button regardless of gear lever position. Once done you just turn the switch off.

This is not ideal as it requires another switch to be pressed to use the cameras but it is worth it to retain the around view monitor. I have found the side camera so useful when parking in the garage to avoid storage items on the floor.

Hopefully down the track someone figures out a way to up regulate the 5.5 volt feed to 12 volt and teh switch will no longer be needed.

I know that post was a little confusing but it proves that the AVM can be retained with an aftermarket headunit

Re:

Just adding to the above is that alpine has a new head unit that is a straight swap for the new xtrail but there is a catch it comes at a cost of about $2,400. A bit too much given that my x is less than a month old.

Re: T31 Series 5 Nissan Connect

I did look into the Alpine option. I contacted Apine Australia directly and asked about the around view monitor. I was told it is like all other aftermarket units and had a single rca feed with trigger. Therefore it is plug and play but around view will require seperate work as I have had to do and is not supported by simply plugging in the factory loom. I also asked Tonkins here in Adelaide and they stated the same. The rep stated it was meant for non factory sat nav models as a plug and play unit. I am happy to stand corrected but this came from Alpine direct.

Hi Tom,

Just reading your post and I just had my sub installed today. Whilst waiting I was speaking to the installer about the Alpine INE Z928Ei (sorry have the brochure next to me). The installer called the rep and apparently someone in Adelaide had one installed and it worked fine with the panoramic camera view but he is getting more details for me as they said there was a intricate loom behind the head unit so they were uncertain whether it was a certainty... His coming back to me tomorrow and I will post his findings over the weekend.

More of a side note, I have the focus sitting in the driveway...

Re:

I ended up retiring the Nissan connect system in favour of Alpine INE-928- this head unit will hook up to the AVM and gets a much better view at 8 inches !! hooking up to cameras wasn't straight forward for the dealer- to use front view camera you have to go into optional extra camera menu on the system- but putting car into revers brings up the normal rear view and around view instantly.

Re: T31 Series 5 Nissan Connect System (including Navigation)

OK so I have been stomping around in the Series 3 and 4 forum about map upgrades and just getting confused. Now Jalal has pointed me in the right direction I'll start again...
Can anyone who has been there tell me what map version would be on my T31 Series V TL Nissan Connect Audio and Nav system? Is it written on the SD card? THe manual says upgrades are only possible thru a dealer. Is this correct? Are there any upgrades even available?
Cheers,
Phil

Re: T31 Series 5 Nissan Connect System (including Navigation)

Hi Phil,

**HOW TO CHECK MAP DATA CURRENTLY INSTALLED**

NISSAN CONNECT SD CARD

Go to: SET UP > NAVIGATION > MAP SET UP > MAP DATA INFORMATION

The screen should display details of the map data. For example:

€˜€˜Map Version: sd2-Nissan

CONNECT_2010_EUR v8۪۪

The above example shows a 2010 SD card, meaning the latest 2011 SD card would be applicable for this vehicle.

Re: T31 Series 5 Nissan Connect System (including Navigation)

My TL Xtrail I picked up in November (complianced 10/13) still has the 2011 map installed.

I asked my dealer about this and they are hounding Nissan for numerous other customers.

Also there are big moves afoot to upgrade the stereo as the Nissan Connect unit is used on just the lowly Micras in poverty spec models in Europe
