Re: Fuel filter

The design of the thing is a joke..a 3 piece, plastic and clipped housing (that doesnt bloody line up once pulled apart) a 12v fuel pump in the centre....and a bag old metal chains in the fuel pick up.

I had mine out three times and flattened the battery trying to start it. Found out when I looked at the old one that I left a rubber bush on the old one that should have gone on the new one and consequently it was not sucking the juice through the hose so the battery went flat.

I took the Exy for a 5km strap, once installed.....hopefully any leaks or airlocks have been bled out.

Find out tomorrow.... emoticon This would easily be the most frustrating thing I have done on the exy...spacers, CAI and the rest.

This drove me nuts

Re: Fuel filter

Yes the housing is a very tight fit. I dried the whole lot with compressed air first and then gave it a generous spray with silicon oil. That did the trick!

Re: Fuel filter

One little tid bit I found is fuel injected vehicles run the pump backwards momentarily first when you start the car to blow anything out of the filter.

Re: Fuel filter

Just changed my fuel filter.

Just a tip as i don't think it has been mentioned here.
Undoing the large plastic ring/nut which holds the entire filter/level assembly down.
To undo this without the special tool can be done by using a large flat bladed screwdriver and placing this behind one of the ridges on the ring and lightly tap with a hammer. Each tap will rotate the ring slowly. You want many small taps and not a few big ones to avoid damaging the ring. Once loosened enough use some rubber gloves for more grip and to avoid cuts and undo by hand.

I needed to vacuum out a lot of dirt caked up around the ring. I have my share of dirt rd driving but was a little surprised at how much dirt had built up.

As for swapping the filter in the assembly is a bit difficult to describe. Is a real pain but just take your time to think about it.

Re: Fuel filter

Another T30 which has had the fuel filter done at 100,000 km. My wife picked up the car so i'm not sure if my trusty mechanic had any issues. I left it with a 1/4 of a tank to provide him with the best conditions to do the job. Was expecting a fuel smell when the car returned home but it was ok.

Fuel guage has the same reading after i filled up the tank which is good, as others have experienced the engine seems to have a slight increase in performance with a clearer fuel line. Didn't save the old one, can only assume it would be soiled like previous ones we have seen. For the who have passed this milestone without the filter change it's good insurance if you plan to keep your car in good working order.

Re: Fuel filter

This could be a hot tip or not! Why not bypass/delete the 100,000 km filter !!!! Then add a new filter into the fuel line in the engine bay with another nissan filter from a turbo model like an S15 or R32/33/34 or if you want the highest fuel flow go for an Z32 (these are supposed to flow the most) but basically a fuel filter from a higher power model will have more than enough flow and filtering abilities than a low power xtrail will ever need. Oh yeh these filters will also be cheaper.

Re:

Don't see a reason to go through this hassle since you are only expected to change the fuel filter twice or three times the most during the life of the car.

Re: Fuel filter

When you look at cars 10 years ago fuel filters where changed at 40,000 - 60,000 intervalls. Manufacturers string if out further to keep short term service costs down. What if your local petrol station has contamination and/or poor filtration of their fuel, you cop alot of crap in your tank. You guys spend alot of money upgrading other stuff on your cars why not ensure it gets the cleanest fuel possible, after all it is the most used liquid that goes through the car into the engine. Also alot of engine running issues can be put down to blocked fuel filters.
