Re:

The oil stain is in much the same position as most pictures (top left) and it's roughly the same as mine (yours is a little deeper), although I have absolutely no oil in the air filter case - never have done.

How many kms has your air filter been in for?

Mark

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

AFAIK its the same filter from new, so 20,000km.

I have a Wednesday appointment with the nissan mechanics, so I'll see what they say. I'm going to go armed with all the info I've gathered so far, including

1)the UK x-trail owner that had the same issue that had his oil separator replaced, and eventually found a fault of the pipe between the air filter and turbo intake
2)Your ECU upgrade (does my car also need it?) which changes turbo cut in time, EGR valve closing time.....
3)Ask them to look at EGR valve and see if it needs cleaning?

At a minimum I'm expecting the filter to be replaced and pipes cleaned so I can monitor the issue from this point on. If not I'm going to plaster their facebook page. I'll post thefacebook link, and I expect all diesel owners that have had this issue, or installed provents to avoid it, to rant at will....

Re:

Ok, mine's 31000km.

I'll look at my crystal ball and suggest to you that the dealer will say that the stain is "normal for the car" and their recommendation will be to run the oil level one notch below full. Certainly I've noticed far less new oil staining on the filter since running it less than full and only one notch down has no impact on the lubrication of the engine and the policy for the Nissan dealers now is to fill the car at the oil change to one notch down from full.

I, for one, aren't worried about a bit of oil on the filter - doesn't affect the engine performance and I get the same fuel economy as I did at new.

Re:

Yep, I suspect your crystal ball is correct. However, just for information, the car has only been serviced at Nissan (1000km and 10,000km) and they already underfilled the oil. I noticed it after the 10,000km, noticing that the electronic oil guage showed one notch under full. I was a bit miffed to to be charged for an oil change then and them not put it to the top, but moved on an thought nothing of it - now I understand this is 'procedure'. I have never put oil in the car myself. Hence that line of argument doesn't add up. Fuel economy is still good, but then I ask myself, what would I be getting without oil in the air?

Re:

So same old same old. They said it was normal. I didnt have any MIL, DPF or fuel economy issues to retort with, so will monitor and see how it goes.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

just a note for others who are going the provent direction, i fitted one to my exy about 6000kms ago, and cleaned out my intake system etc then. I like some others posted fitted a drain hose on for the ease of draining. Checked after 600km nothing in drain hose nor air filter check, but a good tablespoon inside the top of the provent and clean coming out of provent to intake,.... checked after 1000km still nothing in hose nor in air filter check nor in provent outlet to intake and similar looking to previous inside the provent,.... then checked after total of roughly 2000km and still nothing indrain hose ,and provent outlet to intake was clean and air filter had the slightest tinge of color near bottom edge of filter (i suspected my cleaning job not thorough enough),...... so the next time i checked was today at 6000km since installation, (as i was doing an oil change at the time) and checked the air filter (some oil spotting, hmmm) and my provent outlet to intake was oil soaked, and guess what my drain hose was full of oil right up into the provent....

now back to a full day of cleaning the system out but i'm going to have to be more vigilant at draining and i'm going to have to add some sort of catch can to my drain hose to prevent this from ever happening again

For anyone with a Provent 200 you will know the replacement filters/elements cost around the $80 mark. I have found a mob is the US that post to Australia and including postage it is less than $50 Australian. Here is the link. I just bought one so I'm not sure how long the postage will take. I assume it will be weeks rather than days. Plan ahead and you can save some $$$.

Update on the new Provent filter. It just arrived today so that was a week from the US. Not too bad at all.

FInally gotten rid of mine. 35,000 kms on clock.

3 breakdowns, 2 with warning lights.
oil on air filter since 500 kms. fitted provent, drained every 2 weeks until disconnected because of "warranty". reduced oil fill at every service does nothing.
oil on the floor since first week
no smoke,
log book service every 5000 kms, penrite enviro 5w-30
EGR valve failed @ 34,000 kms
best fuel economy 6.8 l/100 km, worst was 10,5 l/100km (towing 1 tonne trailer)

Re:

I ended up installing a Provent, using the instructions in this thread... initially mounted a bit too high, so just moved to the lowest notches.

While mine never showed oil on the airfilter (45,000kms now), after taking off the intercooler and literally having oil drip out, i thought it was a good time as any after the 40,000km sservice to do it (new air filter and all).
