Correct tow bar for the T31?

I recently purchased a 2011 Xtrail from a Nissan dealer. I require a tow bar and discussed at great length the need for a hitch-type tow bar with the sales person, as I have accessories for it from my last car. He told me that the genuine Nissan tow bar would cost over $900, which I declined, so he said he could look into an aftermarket one for me as they needed to have the car for a few days to register it.

I called around for prices for the tow bar anyway, and was told that there was only one type that could be fitted to the xtrail – the hitch-receiver. The dealer called me back, and while his price was about $20 more than quotes than quotes I had received, convenience won.
When I went to collect the vehicle, I found that a swan neck tow bar had been installed. I was upset at this, but he just shrugged and insisted that I never specified what type of tow bar I wanted. I told him that I had also obtained a few quotes for the tow bar, and had been advised that the Nissan Xtrail could only be installed with a hitch-receiver type, to which he responded “That’s fitted isn’t it?”.

Apart from being annoyed that I can’t use the accessories, I’m concerned that this tow bar isn’t suitable for my car! Can anyone advise on this?

There are a few other problems with this dealer regarding the car, and I’m waiting on a response from them. I have a feeling that this might end up Fair Trading, so would like to gather as much information as possible.

Thanks in advance emoticon

Unfortunately it looks like a communication break down has cost you here. Other than the good will of the installer there is not a lot that can be done unless you actually requested a particular tow bar or they showed you a photo of the tow bar prior to installation.

One other tactic might be to check the rating on the installed tow bar. If it is less than the hitch bar you could complain on those grounds.

Re:

Thank you. Yes, unfortunately the details did get lost in all of the negotiations. I had enough trouble getting him to agree to put it on paper. He insisted that as it was after-market and not genuine Nissan, he couldn't put it in the system. By the time he agreed to hand write it on the contract, I completely forgot to make sure it was the right type. When I went calling around following day and was told that there was only one type of tow bar that could be fitted to the xtrail, I thought there was nothing to worry about. When I picked it up I also had a massive argument with them as there was no receipt for it. When I asked what I would do if something went wrong in a few months time, they claimed "we'll remember". Again, I finally got them to hand write it down... Hindsight is 20-20.

What I need to know is, would they have done something dodgy to fit this tow bar?

No idea. I suggest you find out where they sourced it and contact them directly.

Re:

RedHot,
Just get the used towbar from wrecking car yard. If the rear bumper bar was not hit in the accident, it will be the last part damaged.
the towbar i got from the car yard includes a 3.5T tow ball
