I know, but I wonder whether the Renault/Nissan engineers would have not recommended this additional component, if they thought is absolutely necessary. Is the standard oil separator not spec'd correctly - I somehow doubt that given the lengths to which they have engineered the M9R.
No doubt they spent countless hours engineering the M9R but no more than any other engine renault have produced in the past. The french companies have developed a reputation for small engineering oversights. My friends renault rusted through the steering arm due to poor positioning of the AC compressor. It caused condensation and dripped on the steering arm.
The M9R is a great engine given it's output, fuel use etc but that doesn't mean there has not been any oversights at all. The crankcase blowby and EGR issues seem to be proof of that.

Re:
Hi Norman,
I udnerstand your frustration with the car and Nissan Australia, however offerring your car for sale and venting out your frustration in this thread is not the way to go about it.
I have seen your post on the Nissan X-Trail Australia page which is excellent and gives a good warning to other diesel owners. I suggest you continue to hammer Nissan on their facebook page or explore the legal options (if you have any), but can I please aks you to refrain from repeating your posts here in this thread, as we are all aware of your issues as you stated already.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)
Having just read 60 pages on this topic, I'm at a loss how to handle my current situation, and am looking for advice.
I have a 2012 Series IV TS bought from new, and have nearly done 20,000km. The first two services were done at the Nissan dealer in Artarmon. This time round I took it to my mechanic, who has pointed out there is lots of oil on the air filter, and that I should take it to Nissan to get fixed.
On calling the dealer he stated it was my fault, probably because I overfilled the oil. When pointed out that they had serviced it from new by them, he piped down, but insisted that I might have to pay the inspection cost, as at this stage he couldn't say if it was a warranty fix or not.
Up to this point, I haven't had any noticeable driving issues - fuel economy is OK, and no responsiveness issues, and never had a MIL light. We probably do 70% city to 30% highway driving.
How do you suggest I proceed? I have the car scheduled to be looked at on Wednesday, so when I get home I'm going to learn how to take the filter out and take a photo. But what next?

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)
About 20,000km was when oil first appeared on my air filter. Installed the provent at 25,000km. Haven't had an issue since.
Nissan won't be able to fix the issue because the issue is that the oil/air separator is not adequate to do the job.
Take it to Nissan if you want but don't spend a cent on their work or advice as it will likely amount to nothing.

Re:
Thanks Toddyh03. In case you hadn't guessed, I'm a complete novice when it comes to cars. As such, this is my schoolboy thinking.....
Go home and take air filter out - if it looks as wrong as some of the pictures on this forum, replace the air filter, which from what I can gather is about $30. From some of the posters out there, for some its been a once-off problem and has not re-occurred, right?
If it does re-occur, look to get a provent installed. This is on the proviso that this is not considered a customisation that will ruin my warranty with Nissan Australia. I understand some members have been removing it before a service, but this does not interest me. If the provent gets a nod of approval from the dealer, I need to take copies of the custom provent installations and brackets, and find a sydney mechanic who's willing to do the work. Out of interest, how much do you think this would cost. Is there a Sydney mechanic who has this job nailed?

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)
See what Nissan say about the Provent. Then make your decision. Contact western filters to get the Provent and see if the Will install. The Provent kit is around $300 supply only.

Re:
For what it's worth, I have had some spattering of oil on my air filter but nothing serious. I've never had to top up oil between oil changes. The spattering seems to have reduced significantly since I got the ECU software update...possibly a coincidence? Also, the last two servicings the dealer has kept the oil level slightly less than chockers which may also influence the issue.
With the issue now at 60 pages on this thread it seems it's a case of horses for courses. If you want the provent then fill your boots but remember to remove it before any Nissan mechanic looks under the bonnet for a warranty job or else they'll likely walk away from a warranty repair.
Furthermore, I can't find any instance where not having a provent fitted has caused longterm harm to the engine. Is there any recorded instance of a complete engine failure related to this oil-on-the-air filter issue?
Whatever you do Matt is up to you mate. But my car is at 31000km, has no provent and apart from a completely unrelated issue with the EGR valve (apparently faulty from new) and DPF, I've had no issues with having a few spatterings of oil on the filter. If you research on the internet a lot of other Euro 4/Euro 5 diesel cars such as VWs, Mercedes and BMWs, there are similar discussion threads on their forums too, so I don't think this issue is solely related to the Renault/Nissan M9R engine. Funnily, they also suffer issues with their EGR valves and DPFs too. Check out the separate thread on these components but a lot of their failure seems more related to the crappy Aussie diesel more than anything else.
Frankly, I think it's all a bit of a storm in a teacup...although judging from the myriad of photos submitted in this long thread, some M9R owners clearly suffer the problem more than others. The question is...are you really that worried about it? Perhaps consider that before acting and possibly voiding your warranty. For me, the risk ain't worth it and my dealer has been very, very good to me.
