Part ID canister looking under the intake manifold

I was replacing my crank and cam sensor today and noticed there's a canister looking under the intake manifold.
Is that a carbon canister? It's got a small rubber hose that I'm trying to see where the other end should be connected? Or is that a vent hose?

Thanks

Re: Part ID canister looking under the intake manifold

I found from your intro post you have an '01 Xtrail (easier if you had this info in your signature).

From your description, the canister is the vacuum reservoir for the VIAS (Variable Intake Actuator System). One tube should connect to the intake manifold and the other should connect to an actuator solenoid.

Re:

Sorry forgot to mention the year and model of the xtrail
Thanks for that
Anyone got a diagram?

I just googled VIAS and that doesn't look like the part I was asking.
It's almost the size of a can of soft drink
