I had the ECU update done in Jan. I had my mate drive the car to observe the amount of 'smoke' from the exhaust. It does seem less. Begs the question - is it better out or 'recirculated'.

You shouldn't get much smoke out of the exhaust regardless of what the EGR valve is doing as the DPF in the exhaust is designed to catch the soot etc and burn it off.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

I had the ECU upgrade done back in March when the EGR was replaced.

The head mechanic (seems like a very knowledgeable bloke on the M9R) told me that the ECU upgrade changes a number of things - the turbo cut-in time, the boost pressure and the EGR valve closing times. This upgrade is supposed to help reduce EGR failure as well as the problem of oil on the air filter.

When I drove the car briefly after the EGR changeout it seems to have definitely chenged the turbo behaviour, but I haven't driven it enough since the upgrade since the DPF gave out.

Will advise when I get the car back around mid-Apr.

Still worth considering though. I wonder if this ECU update will make a difference to the EGR issue. If it doesn't then a blanking plate will be worth more investigation I reckon. I would like to be able to monitor the exhaust temps after the mod though.

You'd have to get an EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) gauge if you want to monitor it Todd.

Yeah I knew that Tony. Been keeping an eye on some of the Patrol forums for that exact reason.

Re:

Hi All

Re the ECU update, when would a dealership conduct the update? is it only when a problem occurs? As I am picking up my new exy next week, would it already have been updated? or would I have to request it prior to pick up?

Thanks
Aram

Re: EGR malfunction

My manual diesel T-31XT( TS DCi) bought 12/2009 has had a malfunctioning EGR valve since 6 months old. The valve was finally replaced in April 2012. The DPF filter also required cleaning. It has malfunctioned again12 months later. The service dept reckons it needs a software patch after initially stating that the EGR needs replacing. What does everyone think about this? Would love some advice. I travel on motorways and drive at 100km a fair bit. Thanks in advance.

Re: EGR malfunction

I posted about the ECU software patch HERE.

I would recommend you get the patch. I'm told by my mechanic that it helps with the EGR valve issue, and the oil-on-the-oil-filter problem as well.

I have just been all that you are going through (although I've yet to get me car back as it's waiting for spare parts - nil stock in Australia of EGR valves and DPFs).

Read through the other threads related to EGR valves and DPFs and you'll get the whole picture.
