Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)
First off, I wish to thank all those before me who stressed-about, diagnosed and fixed the problem. Thank you for the photos, instructions and posting your version of the fix.
Like a suspenseful book and with a new X-Trail days away, I was eager to find out if the series 5 had this issue. Reading through 50+ pages. I then pre-bought the "universal kit" from Western Filters 10 minutes down the road from me. Friendly helpful chaps.
So here are some photos of my install with some emphasis on things we did a little different.
All photos posted here are available in this public album.
Here we go...
My friend is a mechanic and we started the modification at 180km ODO. The pipe had a little oil in it as reported by someone with 500km ODO.
The modification was fitted to be permanent and would be present during services to Nissan.
We used exactly half the large pipe to the filter as was provided in the kit. We did not shorten it.
Initially I was going to follow Havick (pg 35) and install the filter lower down. However, it was a tight squeeze and looked like the filter may rub a hole in the large hose below. So we installed it high up with the in/outlets crossing over and under the airconn pipe. We used globs of blutack to see if the filter was too close to the bonnet when closed, top and front side. Never touched the 2cm high blutack towers we made.
In achieving this height, we bought some angle brackets from bunnings and had to drill our own holes using a small pilot drill followed by the correct size. The drilled hole did impede on the existing hole a little. We then angle grinded off the excess under the drilled holes. The length of the horizontal side from the screw hole to the bend is: 75mm.
We then joined the bracket to the filter using locknuts.
We cable-tied the pipes to any other pipe or structure so that no rubbing could occur resulting in wear, holes/leaks. So everywhere possible, cable ties were used.
See that the top pipe was tied to the plastic at the back. We removed the peg from the hole and drilled two holes for the cable ties. Hidden behind the top pipe is the bottom pipe attached with cable ties.
Also made sure that the pipe did not touch the turbo which gets very hot. See that the bottom pipe was cable tied to the top pipe. Also from Western Filters, I bought a Unicoil 5/8" for the bend in the top pipe. Use petroleum jelly to lube as it was very difficult to get on. The bar needs to be on the inside of the curve. That was an essential purchase.
Lastly, the draining pipe was installed. This one came with a tap. We had to cable tie it to the bottom so it would not hang down. I would need to break the cable tie to drain and then tie it back up. No worries.
Wide field shot
After 800km ODO, I swapped the air filter with the K&N. The factory filter did not have any oil on it. Here is what the provent filter looks like at 800km ODO.

Re:
well my xtrail is now an overpriced paperweight and nobody can help me.
since having problems from day 1, despite it being brand new, oil leaks, engine pulled apart more than once, loss of oil resulting in check engine lights etc etc... now the egr valve has failed and car is off the road for weeks while part is ordered. i can't sell it, i can't drive it, nissan australia won't help me, dealer who sold me the car can't do much, dealer who's fixing the car can only fix it.
ACCC, consumer affairs, legal action it is now. the only saving grace i have is i am able to get all the b.s. record of this lemon from the dealer of the extensive work done on it. doubt it will come to anything.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)
Hi All,
Ok, i have read all 58 pages (most of them) regarding the oil blow back issue in the M9R engine. My questions stand as this:
1 - installing a catch can will void the engine warranty by Nissan, yes?
2 - will installing a catch can actually fix the problem, as in 100% permanent fix or does it simply manage the problem but it does it really well and as long as I empty the catch can there should be no issue for the life of the car?
3 - would an oil seperator be more effective than the provent 200. I also read somewhere that catch can sdon;t do much if they don't have a breather?
4- does anyone have any updates regarding if Nissan will actually recall the M9R and other similar engines with the oil issue to fix them prmanently or as the crossover will be released in 1yr they simply will not care?
I am actually planning on putting a provent 200 or similar thorugh my mechanic as soon as I pick the car up.
thank you all for your help. I am waiting to pick up my car in 1 week:

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)
Aram answers to your questions
1. You would have to ask Nissan. No one is 100% sure either way. Some remove them before taking the car to Nissan others leave it in.
2. See my air filter photos up this page. The Provent manages the issue and does a pretty good job of it.
3. an oil separator is designed to remove oil from water. What you have here is oil (mist) in air which cools and condenses to oil. The provent is definitely the way to go.
4. Nissan has not provide any advice or even admitted the issue to my knowledge. Even though it's obvious some dealers know about it.
My advice to you would be do as Mike (Valamas) has done above and install when the car is new. You could copy his install as it seems to be a pretty good one.

My dealings with Nissan Australia indicate to me that any non-Nissan approved modifications made to the engine, if found out, will void the engine warranty. They specifically asked me this question before they went ahead with one of my warranty repairs.
I would be extremely careful about fitting a provent if you value your Nissan warranty. don't give them an easy excuse to weazle out of it. Fiddling under the bonnet is one sure-fire way of ending up being left to your own devices...regardless of what you think their obligation might be. In my view, whilst the warranty is valid, don't do anything to give them an excuse.
