Re: Kangaroo Island/Murray Sunset NP

If I hadn't moved up to Townsville, I'd Happily join you. I've been to KI 5 times now. Although I've never driven over there. Most of the roads use to be unsealed. I think the main roads to all the tourist destinations are now sealed. However there are a lot of good, loose gravel tracks that you can have a bit of fun on. They're is definitely far more gravel then bitumen. However in winter, I dare say they're will be a lot of pot holes. There are quiet a few light houses and even light house keeper cottages still in good condition. They're is a cave, wildlife sanctuaries, Seals, Fairy Penguins and other wild life on offer. Also American river is worth seeing. Their is plenty of camping sites. One spot is along the Chapman river, near Antechamber Bay. Great place to set up camp and go kayaking for the novice. The river is only waist - chest high. Although when I was there last, Most toilets were Long drops, At this particular site, You walk across the bridge and theirs a toilet block with flushing toilets on the left. No showers though. As most places in KI run off dams or Rainwater. Only in the main towns will you be able to have all the modern day luxury's. But then, it is camping. Pack plenty of food and water before you head across. As the towns all rely on the fairies and they are all over priced IGA's. It is full of tourist all year round. Especially Asians. They love KI. However they usually stick to the coach tours. Give Yourself at least 5 days if you plan to see all the major attractions. Although It may look small on a map. The gravel Roads will slow you down. Hope this Helps. emoticon

Re: Kangaroo Island/Murray Sunset NP

Thanks for the tips.
Should be able to eke the trip to 3 weeks, so thinking 7 days down via Murray Sunset, 10 days KI and 4 back- leisurely but could be quicker back if KI takes longer.
Don't want to rush it at all.
Think winter less tourists (except for me) and more animal activity.
Willl be full moon on 23rd June, so think that will be very picturesque on water around there and easier to see all the nightlife.

Re: Darling River Run

Gail I will be Bylong Creek 4x4 Park over the June long weekend. If you're passing through that area (Bylong is the name of the nearest town) you should drop in.
