Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation

6dB will give you longer range over flat ground (e.g. highway driving) than 3dB. 3dB will give better all round reception when in hilly country. Depends on your needs as to what will suit best.

Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation

You can get ground independant antennas for various installation. But yes a glass mount is crap. I am an amateur radio license holder and as amateurs we design antennas as its not easy to find antennas tuned for what freq we need. If you were to purchase a BA Falcon passenger side Z bracket which I got mine from Autobarn they will mount really well on the side panel and are shaped right so they follow the funnky shape of the panel and do not scratch any panels. I will get a photo in the morning and show what I mean. But any decent radio installed should know about the bracket I am talking about.

If you have a ground independant antenna you can even mount it on plastic. It all has to do with the design of the antenna, fox example those big think antennas are normally folded dipoles which have their own ground plane or they are coliner which also don't need a ground plane. But I wont go into it all here, that for another day.

Morning Ozstickman

I have had my antenna mounted on a z bracket on the bonnet. Though not where I originally would have liked (top of car) it is working a treat. The guys at Electric Bug in Adelaide were great and very patient with me whilst I worked through all scenarios with them!

Cheers for your comments.

Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation - xtrail newbie

Hi all,

I am also looking at installing a UHF antenna to my new xtrail. I don't have a bull/nudge bar.

To me my options are to install a Z bracket under the passenger side of the bonnet or attach an L bracket to one of the roof rails.

If anyone can clarify the following it would be great:-

1) A Z bracket will fit fine as they are only 1.6mm thick and the gap between the bonnet and left passenger panel is about 3mm. The problem is that the coax for most antennas is over 4mm thick and won't fit without rubbing paint. Any solutions?

2) With regard to the roof rail - what is under the plastic cover? Can you attach a bracket to it? If worse comes to worse, I can probably use the roof rack holes as I don't think I will be fitting a rack but you never know?

Any help/suggestions would be dearly appreciated emoticon . I have just had an on-glass antenna installed emoticon - it's good for a couple of kilometres only and that's not good enough.....

Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation

I had a Z bracket installed for around a year. Even a 1.6mm thick bracket will rub and vibrate as it moves. I wrapped mine in electrical tape but it still did rub off some paint. To me they are a temporary solution only. They will do the job until you get a nudge bar.

As for the roof mount, someone who has installed the roof lights could probably help you with mounting options there.
