Yadboro Flats

Had to head to Batemans Bay for work last friday so I put the call out for anyone to join me for a fish, camp and a bit of easy 4wding. A few mates responded and we ended up with a group of 5 in 3 cars. I had my camper trailer in tow. The Patrol and Hilux both camped in tents/swags. We started with a bit of a fish in Burrill Lake (I used to fish there as a kid so I've been wanting to go back for a while).

Being a 42C day the dogs were obviously very keen for a swim too
Image

The southerly hit at about 5pm and we packed up and headed south down the Princes Highway to Wheelbarrow Road and eventually into Yadboro State Forest. There is a sign at the entry saying "This Road Built for Forest Traffic, In Wet Weather 4WD Only". Apologies for the shocking photo
Image

The road to Yadboro Flats camp was easy. Some sections were clay based (hence the wet weather warning at the start) but overall very easy. Ran into a bloke with a T30 down the bottom who was towing a caravan (so I mean it when I say easy). Had a quick chat to him while he had a look at the snorkel. This was my set up for the trip:

There is a small timber bridge before you get to the camp.

Set up the camper for the night about 20m from the river and cracked a few tinnies. After a pretty steady rain overnight we cooked up bacon for brekky and we headed off. We tried a couple of fire trails that I thought looked fun on the topo but ended up at locked gates and having to turn around. So we headed along Western Distributor Road (basically a dirt highway) until we cam across this
Image
No chainsaw meant we would have to take the slightly more difficult Long Gully Road. This was pretty easy still but there was some clay starting to creep in and some sections were a little slippery. The effect of the overnight rain was starting to appear on the tracks.

We made our way to Cattlemans Fire Trail and immediately it become properly steep and the track had almost no rocks and just clay. Holding the trailer steady down some of the descents was becoming very difficult. We made our way to the bottom and crossed a rocky bottomed creek and were almost instantly greeted by a super steep clay hill. I made it all the way to the top and just ran out of traction. 4 wheels spinning. The clay was so slippery I couldn't reverse down. Instead I was just sliding, which obviously means no steering. We had to get the winch out to keep the trailer straight so I could just slide down the hill. Nothing else to do.
Image

We let the hilux go up ahead and I had another go. Got to the same point again and all 4 wheels spinning. This is where I ended up.

Just incase you think it doesn't look that steep, check out these photos

We hooked up a tow strap and both tried to drive but ended up all 4 wheels of both cars spinning and we actually slid backwards. We had to hook up the winch on the front of the Hilux to take the weight of the cars and trailer, then a tow strap to my car. We winched as we both tried to drive and eventually made it up the hill. It doesn't take particularly deep clay to turn a set of A/Ts into slicks.
Image

We carried on towards Mogood Lookout and on the final climb we found that same slippery clay. The Hilux got stuck going up and had to have another go (at least we he gets stuck he can reverse down - not so easy with a trailer on the back). He got up 2nd go. I had a go and again just ran out of traction. This time we put on a snatch strap between me and the hilux and used his momentum to get me through the slippery section. Watch the car squirm around trying to get traction in the video below.

Made it to the top of the lookout

From here is was an easy drive across 'Shallow Crossing' (a 50m long concrete causeway that crosses The Clyde River) and on to The Sheep Track back to the highway. We reinflated tyres before hitting the bitumen and headed home.
Image

The trailer was pretty flithy by the end of the day.

The track we took can be seen here

Re:

Nice pics Todd.
It is fun when it's slippery though, probably not towing a trailer.

That was a good test for the eye bolt when you got snatched up the hill.
Bet you were clinching your teeth waiting for snapping sound.

Re: Yadboro Flats

Still fun with a trailer just a lot more challenging. That first hill was heaps steeper which is why I said only a tow up that one. After that I was super confident with that eye bolt. It didnt even move. Did really well.

Re: Yadboro Flats

The trailer was brilliant. Never missed a beat. No dust in the tent. Very happy.

Re: Yadboro Flats

Hey Todd, I did Cattlemans Fire Trail in my first ever 4WD outing at Easter 2012. It was dry then. I'm astounded you did it when wet and with a 4WD Trailer!!!!! Well done getting through!!!!

Re: Yadboro Flats

Thanks Ian. I needed a hand twice getting through the most slippery sections but otherwise had no issues.
