Re: Engine not starting
Usually just the very short startup and stop when moving the Xtrail momentarily.
The Xtrail ECU overfuels to help startup and sometimes this means excess fuel leaks from the injectors but it all settles down after a few minutes of running which is why it is recommended to leave the engine running for about a minute or until the needle moves off the cold mark.

Re:
Yeah tough decision.
Bear in mind that the wreckers will only offer you $500 - $1000.
Get a quote from a few mechanics as 4 grand is a bit steep for a head gasket.
You should get away with it for about $1500- $2000, machining included.
Have a read of this thread to see what other members have done.
You could always follow Scott's (evorock) DIY here if you want to have a go yourself.

Re: Engine not starting
Hi Ben, I had already bought a 2010 X-Trail to replace the old girl. I would have already sold her but my wife ad decided to grab it and sell her car. The blown head gasket had her change her mind so it became a question of what can I get for her (the X-Trail, not the wife) as she was with the blown head against with a new head gasket (and maybe other costs for machining etc or another motor or ...).
I decided that the worse case senario, having made the repair and sold her, would be about $1,000 in my pocket. Did I have the time, energy and cash to go ahead with the repair and then sell her? Not really, so I did a quick phone around and sold her to a wrecker for $1,100.
I have no doubt that he will fix her up and sell her as a going concern as she was in good condition but sometimes you have to cut your losses. Trust me it was a difficult decision and there was a tear in my eye. She had been a long trusted companion. Of the near 300,000 km on the clock, we had done 240,000 of those together.

Re:
I'm having similar issues.
originally had fault code P0335 - and changed crank and cam sensors accordingly.
Now having far less start troubles, but not completely fixed.
before you suggest it - yes I have cleared the fault codes.
I'm now suspecting an O2 sensor on the way out - planning to check resistance once engine cools off.
I have an endoscope handy and will poke it in and check the cat when I do.
it will turn as if no compression and cough once or twice.
second attempt will start ok, drove for about 300km today, with no real issue.
The drive included several steep inclines, one paved. Noticed no real loss of power.
other suspects are - TPS or Fuel pump, or fuel pressure regulator.
FYI recently changed fuel pump in search of this issue.
When changing crank sensor, I had air box out, and noticed black buildup around the butterfly in the throttle body - leading me to think perhaps it needs a clear, as well as the MAF.
suggestions anyone?
Edit:
O2 sensor reads 4.3 ohm. I understand this is in the upper end of the scale - engine was warm (approx 30 deg)
I do know that these sensors go high resistance when they die.
Vehicle was purchased at 170,000 and I'm up to 220,000.
I hear the service life is about 100k in the upper range. So I guess I may be due.

Re:
cleaned throttle body - was black, and heavily caked around the butterfly.
cleaned the maf - also looking dusty. - might be time for new air filter.
start troubles are no more, however idling at 1500rpm now, and having no luck with the idle air relearn procedure.
however, I've never had any luck in the past with the manual fault code procedure.
Yes, I have used timers,
yes I have carefully read, and reread the procedures.
perhaps my pedal sensor is faulty?
Edit:
dropped round to a mates place, and let a few people have a go. My mate got the manual diagnostic mode second attempt.
did the idle air relearn, and its back to 700 revs idle.
Very happy.
summary - problem solved by:
replacing cam and crank sensors
tin of maf sensor cleaner - cleaned maf sensor (no touching sensor wires)
tin of carby cleaner and toothbrush on throttle body
manual idle air relearn.
runs like new.
thanks once again for the advice guys.
