You haven''t had any luck with that tranny.
I would sell it when it gets fixed also. Seems like you go around and around.

Re: X-Trail T31 - CVT transmission

Well I couldn't help myself, Had to have a good look under Exy now it's back. Its a new one! all shiny new alloy, found a picking slip on it, 1XF6A 11 308 B5699**** (Serial No). I don't have the elec service manual and was wondering if anyone knows if this is a newer version of the JATCO CVT or same series 1/2 version? I can't see Nissan upgrading a series2 CVT to a series 3-5 model, I doubt if the TCM or ECCU would match ETC?

Cheers

Les

Re:

Les,
I have had a look at the ESM regarding different types of CVT's and could find nothing.
Plenty about listening to owners problems to narrow down diagnostics but no model numbers or tag details.
There are over 200 pages just on the CVT and read as far as my eyes started to blur the screen.

Re:

Interesting views about the CVT. When I took the T31 out for a test drive, I didn't really notice anything. But this is the first time I'm going to a SUV.

End of the day, the sluggish-ness doesn't phase me one bit - if I wanted a quick family-type car I'd go for a AMG CLS63... (if I had the money haha) but settle for a Holden Sportswagon in my price range.

The fuel economy is a worry. For all the extra room I really did want to save on fuel. So will be interesting to see how long a tank of fuel actually lasts. Lastly, we've bought our X-Trail as a family/weekend car. My misses who I've bought it for works 5mins from our house.

Will also take it for a spin and see how quick it goes 0-100km and report back emoticon

Hi Joey,

Please update your signature to state that your exy is a 2.0LT 2WD version, as the views expressed here are applicable to the 2.5LT which is much powerful than its sister 2.0LT version.

The fuel consumption figure are also applicable to the 2.5LT CVT xtrails, so yours should be much less.

Ah whoops sorry forgot about this thread.

Continuing the discussion here (http://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/t130356) I find it a bit disappointing in regards to pick up and fuel economy. I'm wondering how/where/what Nissan base their testing on. I'll keep driving it and try different driving styles and see what happens. But it is better fuel economy than my commodore that is closer to 10Lt / 100km as the T31 2012 is 9.7Lt / 100km.

Re: X-Trail T31 - CVT transmission

Found this info on another forum and it points to an SAE Technical Paper produced by Nissan (SAE 980822); this paper talks about micro-slip between belt and pulleys (ps macro slip is really bad).

Source here: http://www.lasercannon.com/cvt.htm (read Q & A at end)

SAE Page with article link and several other interesting ones here: http://www.sae.org/search?searchfield=980822&typ=paper

Hope this hasn't been posted before - good read!

An insight into the detailed engineering to make these CVTs work.

Re: X-Trail T31 - CVT transmission

Excellent information, thank you for that.

I was already happy with the latest CVT iteration but after reading the linked articles, I am even happier.

Brought up on manual gearboxes it was with some trepidation that I embarked upon the CVT adventure, but now that I have adjusted my driving style to get the best from the semi-sentient gearbox, I am very pleased with the upgrade.

Like a good dog, the CVT responds best to clear instructions.

Always flooring the accelerator is a pointless waste of fuel and capability:

In my particular experience I've found it better at take-off to depress the accelerator to the position corresponding to the speed you wish to attain, then the gearbox works it all out for you with minimum fuss and bother but with maximum economy.

That technique still makes it as fast (or faster) off the lights as anything else on the road.

Depends what you are comparing it with I guess emoticon but to me the CVT T31 is as slow and heavy as a tank at take-off and nothing is changing that experience and feeling for me, no matter what technique I use.

Too much noise but not much action from the engine!

A completely different behaviour to the way it functions on the highway, spirited and lively and works perfectly fine.

My sentiments exactly. I'm no revhead but definitely lacks the nimbleness of the T30 and feels very heavy around town. a pleasure to drive long distances though.
