Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

Hi Guys,

Well I was reading this post at lunch and thought that since my fiance has a big gripe with her Focus in that the steering wheel controls do not light up that I would rectify that on my T31 Ti.

So I read through the whole thread (I think anyway) and at lunch I went shopping and bought a new multimeter (good excuse) some wire and other bits and pieces.

I got home really excited but for some reason I turned the lights on and low and behold my T31 Ti Petrol 4WD steering wheel lights lit up. Looks like the new ones (I only picked mine up yesterday afternoon) have the lights hooked up to come on with the parking / head lights from the factory. Build date is April 2012. I probably should have tried before shopping but I'm glad I discovered that before pulling apart the dash of my 23.5 hour old car lol =)

Re:

Drove around tonight and realised what a mess I was trying to hit buttons that I couldnt see.

I'm a bit scared of wrecking the car since I have little/none experience with wiring. I've helped a mate fiddle around with car stereos & headunits but nothing like this. Anyone got time to give me a hand and/or do it for me? emoticon

Would something like this void my warranty?

Re:

Apologies for re-visiting a old post.

I picked up my brand new 2012 Series V TI this afternoon. I took it for a quick spin tonight and noticed the gear shift (D, N, R) does not light up.

Is this normal with Series 5? It is a bit disappointing if I have to modify this. Simple things such as a seat heater button only has 1 light but does not have a toggle light for Hi or Low setting.

My other car is a 2008 Prado Grande where all features light up a Christmas tree. When I took the X-Trail for a test drive I didn't even think about checking for simple things such as these lights.

It's not a big deal but just find it annoying considering it's a TI.

Yep, the X Trail doesn't come with the illuminated lights you mentioned.
Don't know why, the Japs obviously leave them out for a reason.
Read through this thread to find out how to light them up easily.

Hi Nav,

As a new member to the forum, your first post should be made in the introductions section of the forum before posting anywhere else. You will be assigned a Member ID in that process as well. Please do so when you get a chance.

Yes, it is normal and the way to have the gear stick light-up is detailed HERE. Whatever has been done to the Series 3 and 4 is also applicable to Series 5.

Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

I picked up my new(er) car on Friday, and the steering wheel controls really bug me.. I'd fiddled a lot with my other xtrail and figured lots out from the DIY threads here, but I don't feel comfortable messing with electrical stuff when I have no idea what I'm doing.

Any ideas on if anywhere would actually do this for me, and how much I'll have to pay to get someone to do it?

Re:

If you follow exactly what has been done here you can't go wrong, worst case scenario is that you blow a fuse if you connect the wrong wire.
Might be an idea to put your location in your signature so other members know where you are from.

Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

Thanks Tony.. Didn't think about the location thing.

I'm pretty good at following instructions, but when you've never done anything electrical they're a little vague.

8. Cut the wire in suitable length (15cm) and prepare it as step 6. But fold the centre core into half and twist it again. This will make the contactable interface larger. Insert the cooper wire into the socket of the pink cable occupied and put in a plastic stick to make it stable.

For step 8, is the wire going into the hole WITH the pink cable? And what is a plastic stick?

What happens with the wire once it's all done, does it tuck away neatly? It also says tape up the wire on the cables.. Does it get taped against other wires?

Sorry for the lame questions, I'd just prefer to get it done right lol. One more thing.. Do I need anything other then some wire and electrical tape? Where do I get wire from, and what exactly am I asking for as someone who just doesn't buy wire.. Do I get it from somewhere like dicksmiths?

Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

Hi Leeny
If your new acquisition has a 4WD badge under the Xtrail on the back door, it is Series 4. If not , it is a tried and trusty Series 3 like mine, regardless the mod is the same. I have the connector pin to suit the steering end, I can terminate that to a piece of cable with an inline fuse and a tap splice. All you need to do is fit the pin and crimp the splice to the wire at the ESC switch. I can send some additional instructions as well. Let us know and send me a PM with your mailing details.

John
