Re:
Yep, the X Trail doesn't come with the illuminated lights you mentioned.
Don't know why, the Japs obviously leave them out for a reason.
Read through this thread to find out how to light them up easily.

Is this normal with Series 5? It is a bit disappointing if I have to modify this. Simple things such as a seat heater button only has 1 light but does not have a toggle light for Hi or Low setting.
Hi Nav,
As a new member to the forum, your first post should be made in the introductions section of the forum before posting anywhere else. You will be assigned a Member ID in that process as well. Please do so when you get a chance.
Yes, it is normal and the way to have the gear stick light-up is detailed HERE. Whatever has been done to the Series 3 and 4 is also applicable to Series 5.

Re:
If you follow exactly what has been done here you can't go wrong, worst case scenario is that you blow a fuse if you connect the wrong wire.
Might be an idea to put your location in your signature so other members know where you are from.

Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)
Hi Leeny
If your new acquisition has a 4WD badge under the Xtrail on the back door, it is Series 4. If not , it is a tried and trusty Series 3 like mine, regardless the mod is the same. I have the connector pin to suit the steering end, I can terminate that to a piece of cable with an inline fuse and a tap splice. All you need to do is fit the pin and crimp the splice to the wire at the ESC switch. I can send some additional instructions as well. Let us know and send me a PM with your mailing details.
