Turbo replaced - performance better but whistles like a siren

I have had performance issues with my now 1yr old T31 Diesel (127kW) since pretty much new. Several visits to dealer didnt reveal anything. I then took it to a different dealer and they said the turbo shaft was out of whack and replaced the whole turbo. Performance is great but now there is a very loud whistle from 1750-2000 rpm. I would say that this is when the turbo comes on boost. It is a bit annoying, being just on the unpleasant side of loud and high pitched. Dealer says it is normal and that the old turbo didnt make the noise as it was crook. Any ideas how I can convince the dealer or myself emoticon that it is right/wrong.
PS: I am in Europe

Re:

The sound of a turbo whining up is the best sound to hear in an engine.
A lot of people upgrade the exhaust system just so they can hear it spin up.
Maybe it's because the old one was buggered and now there is a new noise.

Trust me, after a little while you will start enjoying the sound, especially if you are a 'driver'.

I would have them check all seals on the air-side of the turbo as there could be a small leak which lets pressurised air force through when the turbo starts to spool up just before the engine revs require the extra airflow and drop the built-up pressure slightly.

Yeah I like the sound of a turbo myself, but this seems just too loud. We have a Mazda diesel as well but it doesnt whistle half as annoyingly as the Xtrail. Tony thanks for the tip on checking all the seals. Will try to push dealer to do that.

Re:

Stupid question....
But have you taken it back to the dealer, demonstrated the noise in a test drive, then jumped in another like model and demonstrated the difference?

A direct comparison is what you need. Otherwise how do you know that sound isn't just normal, especially since yours wasn't ever working properly.

FYI, mine generates up to 1.5 bars boost. Im assuming thats normal, and while i can hear the turbo hiss, its doesn't come and go at different rpm. Once it spools up (from ~1500 rpm) it sounds the same at any rpm. Just depends on throttle.
