Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

I had to dig out the radio code today so had a look where in the manual it says about the 75Kgs vertical load on the tow bar. It is on page 4-5 but clearly states that it is for EUROPE. Hence Steve, unless you're in Europe you should be fine with 150kgs on your device.

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer Jayco Hawk

Hi to all,
it's been a while since this thread has seen light of of day. We took delivery of our Jayco Hawk yesterday after a 2 hour orientation. None of this hand over the money and your out of here. Lowering the van onto the xtrail towball, the back dropped about 30mm, no problems there. With the current orientation of the tow ball, the the van is slightly uphill, nothing to be concerned about. We did a quick lap around the block to check the electric brakes, all good there as well. Paperwork done and plates fitted, we were on our way.
2 kilometres from the dealership is the Gateway bridge which spans the Brisbane River and it's a fairly steep climb from either side. Hit the bottom at 80 kph, over into manual 4th, and it held 3000 rpm all the way to the top at 80 kph. I was rapped. On our way home we went via Wamuran and the bottom of Mt Mee and both the Xtrail and Hawk handled great. Just like when I tow the boat, it is best to use Manual mode to get up to sixty or eighty Klm before going over into Auto mode. The same applies when you are nearing an uphill run, shift over into manual and down change to keep your momentum. Working with what the Xtrail can deliver is the key.
Bit of a long distace plan is to build a rear bumper which doubles as a outboard mount. A tinnie or composite fibreglass on the roof racks should just about complete it.

Just for the record, it's Birth Certificate says it weighs 983kg and the ball weight is 122 kg. I'm fitting a 30kg battery about 1200 behind the axel centre so this will offset the ball weight unloaded by 11 kg.

Hi Neil,
The Jayco dealer here in Brisbane is Brisbane Camperland on Wynnum Rd at Tingalpa. Wynnum Rd has an off ramp from the Gateway Motorway, soon as your off the Motorway into Wynnum Rd, first set of lights your there.

Check the towball weight of the Penguin, it's over the limit @ 155KG for the Outback version.

I'd be interested to hear more experiences on towing Jayco campers as I am thinking of buynig one. I'm somewhat paranoid about towing safety and like to have a large margin between any weight rating and actual towing weights/balance

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

Hi to All,
Since getting the camper, I have been looking at ways to reduce the ball weight knowing that our Xtrail is front wheel drive. Having fitted the annex and kitchen awning I now had the dilemma of what to do with the poles. Looked at putting the pole carrier across the front, but his would only add to the weight, looked at putting it on the roof rack, can't reach, so after a week of engineering, the pole carrier is at the rear of the camper. It had to be low enough not to obscure the number plate and also allow the bed poles to still fit, but high enough that you can still raise and lower the jacks. It's about 25 kg that comes off the ball weight.
Our first trip was to Bjelkie Peterson Dam, a 400 klm round trip from home. It's one of those roads which hardly has a flat piece in it. The xtail took 52 litres to do it or 13 litres per 100 klm, not bad I think. It towed extremely well and even under emergency braking to avoid being in a head on, it stopped true and straight. I mainly drove in manual mode, changing down before losing momentum on the hills. It was a good shake down test prior to Wooloolga in two weeks.

I'm buying a Jayco Swift Outback next month, how do people get on with mirrors?
As the Jayco is narrower than a normal caravan are extended mirrors required?

Re:

Towing mirrors are a legal requirement when towing an RV.

If towing anything that makes your car look like it needs new/upgraded suspension you in fact need a distribution hitch. Suspension doesn't make ball weight disappear and will do next to nothing for safety.

http://www.eaz-lift.com/eazlift/

10% of loaded weight should always be your goal for ball weight.

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

Hi Steve and Kris,
I bought the mirrors that clip on to your existing mirror and extend out from there. Found that I see see more in just the Xtrail's mirror so haven't bothered fitting them again. No problems seeing past the Hawk.

Do some reading regarding Weight Distribution Hitches and the Xtrail as Nissan do not recommend them.

 John
