Re: Wheel Bearings

I have been reading all the previuos posts re: wbrgs and can possibly suggest you guys try a Bearing Service company,( if you wish to do the job yourself) I will be doing this as our Xy has just started making that humming noise from the RH front wheel. These brgs are original, 176K.
This same side has had an outer CV boot changed aprox 6 months ago.
Here in Perth I will be trying StateWide Brgs Services.

Re: Wheel Bearings

Had a humming noise front right side for ages, thought it was tyres. Removed tyre, hub etc bearing completly shot only outside bearing inner was like new. The hardest part is removing the bearing faces, cone, shell whatever you want to call them. You need a big press and alot of patience. Quite an easy fix for people who are mechanically minded.

Re: Wheel Bearings

have been reading this forum with great interest and a little (lot) of concern. I've recently had my 2011 TS in to replace the front left wheel bearing - twice in five weeks! The dealership assures me that it was replaced the first time, not just adjusted, but surely a new one wouldn't go in only 5 weeks?
My first indication that something was wrong was a low drumming noise from the front left at speeds of about 70-80 km/h. I took the mechanics for a test drive, I think they thought I didn't know what I was talking about. Finally convinced them there was a problem and they had it for 2 days to replace the bearing. 5 weeks later and this time the noise was a metallic clunking, like a chain dragging along the ground (it only disappeared when I put the window up!) So they had it for another 2 days to replace the bearing again.
Any tips for what I should keep an eye on and questions I should be asking the mechanics? What causes these bearing to wear out anyway?

Re:

Are they sure and have they absolutely determined that it was faulty wheel bearing? Seems a bit strange for the wheel bearing/s to go bust so early.

Re:

If the new wheel bearing was hit into place unevenly, defective or left dry with no grease, then yes a bearing might not last as long as it should.
5 weeks is a little too short of a life for a bearing though.

The hub could be a little bent or out of shape for a 2011 to go through 2 bearings in it's short life.
Has it hit the gutter hard or been in an accident?

Re:

Well, the mechanics have told me that it was the wheel bearing and they haven't suggested that it would be anything else. I'm still doubtful that they replaced it the first time round. I thought it strange that the first one went at about 12,000km, then was totally stumped when the bearing was stuffed again 1,000kms later.
The car hasn't been in any accidents or it any curbs - I do heaps of driving on highways and off road across farms (including cattle grids) and dirt tracks, so maybe its hit a pot hole or two, but seriously its a 4WD - its designed for those conditions and that's why I got it!
Any tips for how I check hub shape?

Re:

I visual inspection usually works, just check that it's round for starters and straight.
If you have a pair of verniers just check the diameter where the bearing sits.

You could be right though as they probably overlooked it the first time and never replaced it at all.

Don't get too confident, it's not built as strong as you might think it is.

Do we have Pics of what to check for including the hubs. I know the method of jacking the wheel up and seeing if there is any play, but don't know what to look for visually.

Re:

If you have the ESM have a look at FA (Front Axle) from page 68 onwards.
There are different diagrams for all the engine variants even between the Manual and CVT transmissions.
I can't up load diagrams because Runboard doesn't allow PDF's to be uploaded.

Edit, page number.

Re: Wheel Bearings

Apropos to wheel bearings and Dealers:

Although easy to fix, it often seems 'too hard' to Dealers as it it is not a "normal" warranty problem and it is quite hard to determine.

Many years ago I had a Honda Civic which developed a 'whisper' of RHS front bearing at 1000 Km.

It took repeated visits, several "repacking's" and the beginnings of irateness until they acknowledged that the whole RHS assembly needed replacement.

Edit: (Even then, they probably thought they were just placating me until I took the Manager for a drive and he heard the actual problem- which he initially tried to blame on tyre noise until I pointed out the difference).

It only took 6 months of nagging to get a full replacement of the housing + bearings - but that is what it needed to fix the problem.

The bearings (all 3 replacement sets) were probably OK, but the assembly which held them was obviously deficient.

It can happen in the best of houses.

It has not happened in my Nissan x-Trail , but your symptoms reminded me of my early experience with the Honda - which was then completely faithful and reliable for the rest of its life.

Might be applicable, might not.
