Re: Faulty Ryco Z445 Oil Filter

Just an update on my situation...

I went to Autobarn at Mile End and they weren't aware of the issue, so I had to buy a replacement (now $20). I fitted the new one and then noticed quite a few oil spots on the driveway (even the length of it, old one was leaking enough to leave a trail as I came home).

Went to the Ryco website (thanks for the link above) and submitted a message. Got a call a couple of days later from a guy, who was very apologetic and keen to catch up with me.

He called around, explained the fault and asked what he needed to do to make it right. Ended up with an offer of half a dozen Z445s, and some degreaser for the driveway. Pretty happy with that... except that was before Australia Day, and I haven't heard from him since... He was supposed to come back that week and exchange the faulty one for the good ones.

According to his business card, he was the GUD State Manager (and it included more than one state).

So I may be using Ryco filters in future, but I don't think I'll ever buy one again.

Re: Faulty Ryco Z445 Oil Filter

As already outlined elswhere i have been a casualty of this faulty filter aswell. A new one has been replaced but will keep a lookout for any suspicious activity. Next time will go for either the K@N or Nissan depending on price difference.

Re: Faulty Ryco Z445 Oil Filter

'I could only get another ryco from my local auto store and "this one has "made in indonesia" on the box. . I have replaced it and so far so good, but the old one didn't leak for the first few thousand km's (at least I didn't notice the leak until then) so I will keep an eye on this one.'

How has that Oil filter performed compared to the 'made in China' ones?
Personally after having lived in Indonesia for the last 5 years I wouldn't go near any mechanical stuff produced here ...trust me!

Re: Faulty Ryco Z445 Oil Filter

Interesting reading here. I have been using gen. Nissan oil filter thinking it is the safest way to go and today i had one fail and dump 4 litres of exy Castrol Edge all over my concrete while doing an oil and filter change. When i removed the filter the thread looked a bit sus like it had crossed, but i had screwed it on carefully by hand until i thought it had made contact and then torqued a further 3/4 turn. As i didn't have a hoist i couldnt get close enough to see where the seal was failing. The o ring looked fine when i removed it, but i suspect the faces had not come together flat. The threaded hole looks sus to me but i didn't take that much notice when i put it on first. The local Nissan service people claim they've never seen one fail. I went out and bought a Ryco (same price by the way - just shy of $20 ) and another 5 litres of Castrol edge - no problems - straight on; but i will be keeping a close eye on things and being particularly carefull when filling with a new filter. I have been changing filters for over 30 years and never had one fail on the thread.

Re: Faulty Ryco Z445 Oil Filter

I suspect mechanics refuse Ryco filters because they cost a little more. Not sure about oil filters, but have a look at the cheaper air filters and compare to Ryco. Ryco has a lot more folds which means a greater surface area which means cleaner air for longer.

Have been using Ryco for last 35 years on private cars i.e around 140 filters, with at least 16 on the exy, with not one failing. Maybe lucky didn't get the Made in China ones.

This thread was started Dec/ 09, has there been any problems with filters purchased since or just one bad batch?

Re:

You have recent updates in this thead stating the same problem, so it's not a matter of a bad batch it seems.
