T30 engine cut out and idle vibration

Hi Everyone,
I have a 2003 T30 which I purchased 4 years ago as a used vehicle from a Nissan dealership in Brisbane. I had an LPG conversion around 3 years ago. This vehicle has been trouble for a long time. I had the butterfly screw issue and had the head rebuilt at my expense. The dealership would not honour the used car warranty as I'd had the lpg conversion. One year ago the gearbox was rebuilt after it failed.

My current (and longstanding problems are as follows:

1) I have an intermittent engine cutout / shutdown. This occurs on either fuel type, mostly after the crest of a steep hill I have to drive on each day. It occurs on deceleration when I apply the brake pedal. This is more likely if the engine is cold and I have accelerated significantly getting up the hill (less likely if I let the engine warm up and nurse it over the hill at lower revs). It is NOT on fuel changeover as it occurs when lpg is manually disabled. It has also occured once on a flat road but also within minutes of start-up. As I have to navigate a sharp mountain bend after the hill where this normally occurs, I am getting very scared off actually veering off the side of the mountain with the resultant loss of brakes and steering.

2) For 2 years I have had a worsening rattle/vibration on idle. This is worst in reverse or drive and even worse with the AC turned on. Here is what has been done to attempt to fix it:

- Cam and crank sensors replaced
- Accessory belt tensioner replaced twice. This belt can be seen to flap about as though the tensioner is not working but 2 new genuine tensioners have not changed this. The belt seems to be the source of the rattle but not sure.
- Drive chain and full assembly replaced with new chain/assembly
- Engine mounts replaced
- Alternator overrun pulley replaced
- Mechanic used shorter belt to test/bypass A/C compressor but rattle remained

I am at my wits end. Even if I could get rid of the rattle in order to get a decent trade-in would help. I have read so many forums but it is rare to see an endpoint for the posters with the problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Danielle

Hi Danielle,

I believe you posted the exact same post with your previous user ID, so if I find it or find your previous user ID, I will let you know what it is so you can keep using the original username you have created for yourself rather than repeating the information all over again emoticon

The answer to your problem is a simple one.....

There is no such thing as "fixing the loose butterfly screws" issue once it happened, as this means that you only got half a fix done and in all cases where such a patch-up job was done, the xtrail would suffer from consequent problems.

In ALL cases on the loose butterfly screw, the only real fix is to have the engine replaced, as the damage caused to the cylinder head is far too great to be repaired back to the factory values. Rebuilding the head is NOT the answer at all and I bet if you do a compression test of that rebuilt engine you would see that it still has problems.

Had you come here to our forum seeking advise when you had the butterfly problem, we would have advised you against re-building the head and wasting money on such a repair job when you could have spent that money on buying a 2nd hand engine with no problem. That is the only logical answer to your issue if you still want to keep driving the car hassle free.

Hi Jalalski,

Thanks for your reply. I haven't actually posted this problem before today. I last used my old username some years ago (chook81273) to post about the butterfly screw problem.

I forgot to mention that I did have a compression test and all four cylinders were in the 160s if I remember rightly so the mechanic felt that while they weren't ideal they weren't likely to be the cause of the problem.

Cheers
Danielle

And yes Jalal, you did advise as you said (thanks emoticon )but the Nissan dealership had already called and suggested they may be able to cover the cost so in it went. Unfortunately they didn't cover the cost emoticon Here is a link to my original post:

Re:

That's right Danielle and I believe the issues you are having now are directly related to the damage caused to Cylinder #1 and it has been damaged beyond repair because of the screws.

As I said, if you want to keep the car, start shopping around for a 2nd hand engine.

Re:

Danielle,
If you want to double check that your cylinder is damaged, find a mechanic with a bore scope (small camera on a flexible shaft) to insert it into the engine and have a look for signs of damage.

With a bit of luck it might be something else that is causing the engine to do what it is doing, but as Jalal said, it doesn't sound promising.

Re: T30 engine cut out and idle vibration

Thanks for your replies. As for the engine stall/cut out, I have realised after much researching that this issue is particular to Xtrails that have had an LPG conversion. Their stories are identical to mine. It seems they all have similar symptoms i.e. engine cut out on warm up, occurs on both fuels, mostly within 2-3 mins of start up. Their must be something related to temperature that is unique to the LPG converted X Trails that is causing this. If only I knew what!
