Re:

Hi Gail

My previous tyres were Cooper CS4s and I loved them. Couldn't get any better during the wet and they made driving in the rain actual fun because they were so good, and they hung onto corners in tight bends like glue.

I now have Yokohama Geolander AT/S's (G012's) which are very good in the dirt. Every time I leave town I have 17km of dirt, each way. But they are nowhere near as good in the wet on sealed roads as the Coopers.

I love to head off down dirt roads just to see where they go, and it's nice to have confidence when I'm doing it - but realistically I don't get to do it that often, just the bit on the way to the bigger town, and I'm giving serious thought to getting the Coopers again next time.

Somebody some time ago commented the Coopers did well in the dirt - are you reading this thread, 'cause I'd like to know how they performed. I didn't get to do much dirt when I had mine on.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Thanks for an excellent and informative thread. I am looking for a new set of summer road tyres for my 17" rims. Will 235/60-R17 fit without (or with only minor) rubbing?

My X-Trail is a 2002 T30. Original wheels are 215/65-R16. Here in Norway there is a +/- 5% rule for tire size, so 235/60-R17 is well within the law for my car. Speedo calibration is not an issue either. So basically all I am wondering is about the potential rubbing emoticon

Also, I am considering Achilles Desert Hawk HT's since they are reasonably priced and seem to be well liked on the internets. Have anyone here tried them on an X-Trail?

Re: Replacement Tyres

I ended up ordering Nexen Roadian HT 235/60-R17. I'll check back when I have had them mounted and tested.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Tyres are getting mounted today, so I will pick them up tomorrow. I'm a little excited, because the tyres looked pretty damn beefy and seemed to be light of weight too. I might take a ride home to Nordfjord in my X-Trail this weekend if there are no probs with the tyres.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Wow...going from 215/65/16 (diameter 686mm) to 235/60/17 (diameter 714mm) is a 28mm lift without needing to pay extra to fit spacers or getting spring lift.

My understanding of Australia NSW regulations state that a 15mm difference from original is max allowed.

That's why I am going to replace my 215/60/17 (diameter 690mm) with 225/60/17 (702mm).

That will give me an extra 12mm lift to go with the 35mm spring lift I previously had done last year.

lucky you.

cheers

Re: Replacement Tyres

The lift is only 14mm, the diameter increase is 28mm but the radius increase is only 14mm. Only the increase at the bottom lifts the car.

Re: Replacement Tyres

yeh...you're right...silly me.

Oh well, I'll only get a slightly higher lift to go with my pedders spring lift.

cheers again

Re: Replacement Tyres

I picked up my new wheels today. As I loaded them in the trunk I noticed they were not as heavy as I had feared -- but by the gods of rubber, they were pretty beefy!

When I had mounted two of them on the left side, the gained lift was strongly apparent when looking at the car from behind. With all four wheels mounted the effect of the gained lift was much stronger than I had expected.

On full lock to the left there is a miniscule rub on the right inner wheel arch (plastic fairing). On full lock to the right there is no rub unless the suspension is compressed a little. The amount of rub is nonetheless of no concern to me considering how I use my car.

So without further ado; here are some pics.

The configuration is Nexen Roadian HT 235/60-R17 on german Dezent M rims.

I strongly suspect that fuel economy will suffer though. These wheels are heavier, larger and wider than the stock size, so the rolling resistance and increased mass in rotation is bound to make me suffer for my vanity. But who cares!! This is so sexy! emoticon

Re:

They look good.
I don't honestly think you will notice any difference in fuel consumption.
Do you get any rubbing at full lock?.

Re: Replacement Tyres

There is a wee rub on full lock to the left, and a little rubbing on full lock to the right with compressed suspension. It does not prevent the wheels from turning though, because the plastic fairing yields easily.
