Can 4x2 X-Trails be used on sand?

I have a T31 series IV 4x2 exy. I want to know if i can use it on the beach? I have heard that because they are front wheel drive, they should be ok, providing i deflate the tires to about 18-20 PSI. Can the good people on the forum help me on this issue, as there is top fishing spots over here in the sunny west i owuld like to get to!

To stop any questioning as to why i purchased the 4x2 version, it's becuase i do alot of km's as i'm a sales rep and this is my work car. I have now clocked up 41,000km in 11 months! So far it's been a great car, but just want to know if i can get to onto the beach!

Re:

You can drive on sand but you would have to stick to the hard stuff.
Your biggest problem is that you usually have to drive through the soft sand to get to the hard sand.
If you stop in sand in a 2wd and take off a little too friskily the tyres will just bog down and there you will stay, front or rear drive.
I wouldn't recommend it, unless you like a lot of recovery sessions.

Get yourself a set of Max Traxx and a shovel ,4x4 compressor kit and Slime digital tyre guage These will go along way in assisting recovery by yourself.
Max traxx on special at the moment at Supercheap and the Slime gauge is about $41 at Repco but i purchased mine from the US $20 shipped to ya door.

Thanks guys! I'll wait for the brother-in-law to come down from Kalgoorlie next month, and we'll head out together! He has a navara! Awesome recovery vehicle! emoticon

Tell us how you go, but I really cant see how a heavy FWD car can go on sand.

Re: Can 4x2 X-Trails be used on sand?

I think it's going to struggle and bog too easy.

Don't do it if you don't have a recovery vehicle and seriously, watch out once you go below the high tide level..... As otherwise you'll be a fish trap if you don't get it recovered.

I've tried soft sand in my 4x4 diesel and it just wanted to either bog down or just didn't have the clearance on the soft access tracks and was dragging all the underbody plastic bits, would eventually have probably broken something off if it had kept going forward.

I have a big 4x4 background and still own a heavily modded patrol, have done lots of sand work including Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach, and the hardest dune work I've done would be the Bellingham dunes in Tassie where you have to hit them at about 90 at the bottom and frantically downchange in a manual to keep the power on to actually get to the top..... If you stuff a change slightly, it's a long reverse back down. Of a group of us, only I and a auto jeep (4l petrol) made it.

I've also done a fair bit in sand in rear wheel drive in my vehicles (or a bit in a 2wd hilux work ute even on a sandflat site north of Bowen) but can't see how a front wheel drive could pull itself along well?
