Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Okay Guys and Girls - Joey is back in town for a few days emoticon

Firstly - DO NOT REDUCE THE OIL IN YOUR ENGINES

It is there for a reason - it is called splash lubrication for the crank and bottom end etc

Reducing the oil volume will not solve or reduce the problem. They are telling you porky pies! emoticon

The oil that is getting into the system is in vapour form caused by atomisation of oil under pressure ie pressure feeds to cam journals etc.
Dont forget that this is also a closed positive crankcase engine ie there is always a build up of pressure with in the engine - it is required to pass the emission laws as there is not allowed to be any discharge to the atmosphere so they channel that vapour under low pressure back into the engine, that is the problem.

The only permanent solution to the problem is to redesign and improve the efficiancy of the oil seperator unit located on the top of the engine.

End of story - full stop.

Cheers Joe

Re:

Long awkward pause?
No post in this thread for over a month. I'd like to be able to agree with Joe that it is "End of Story - Full Stop" but for some members who are still suffering this problem the mystery still remains.
Funnily, for me, after 6,000km I still have absolutely no sign of oil on my oil filter. There definitely seems to be an inconsistency between cars that suffer this problem and cars that don't.
And the oil on my dipstick is still chockers and I no, don't have a Provent.
Any news or new stories from anyone on this strange problem?

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Ok.... so just clicked over 40,000km's with the Provent installed, and not a single drop of oil on the airfilter or anywhere else for that matter.

I'm glad I installed it day one.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

I have a 2011 Diesel 7,000K and I am having problems

EGR light coming on
Oil on air filter and in air intake.
Started running roughly and knocking and rattling particularly at lower revs
Loss of power/tourque

Dealer has lowered the oil level and cleaned EGR as advised by Nissan.
Nissan state through dealer that engin knock is normal for the model.

Wish I had bought another Petrol emoticon

Re:

AusSki,

Very sorry to hear of your woes. When you say EGR light I am assuming you mean the DPF light. Are you a city dweller and do a lot of short trips at low speeds? Just trying to ascertain if there is a pattern that exacerbates the problem. I'm at 7000k's in my TL too and have never had a DPF light, but then again in Perth we regularly travel at speeds at or above 70kmh so the DPF has the chance to burn off regularly.

Auski,
My advice is to have your intake system cleaned while under warranty. And then fit the provent as soon as you can.

Ausski

Just be wary that if you decide to fit a Provent, there is a chance it will void your warranty if anything else happens to the engine...unless you make the Provent easily removable.

I've done a lot of research into this issue and spoken to a lot of diesel car owners, including a work colleague who owns a Diesel Renault Koleos (has the same M9R engine as the XTrail). Splotches of oil on the air filter seem to be common to most of the modern small turbo diesel engines. Clearly some who have complained in this forum are experiencing more than splotches and indeed seem to have a genuine problem, whilst others are not experiencing it at all. There seem to be a very strange inconsistency in this issue and I find it even stranger that nobody can seem to pinpoint any single cause of the problem...although I'm starting to wonder if it has something to do with how much low-speed driving the car does. Here in WA I spend a lot of time at 70km/h or above and it gets a run at 100 for a couple of minutes almost every day. Maybe there is something in that, who knows.

There seem to be many diesel Exy owners who have the oil-on-the-filter problem and report that it has never given them dramas. Others have simply replaced the air filter with a K&N element that means the filter is cleanable and re-usable and that seems to be a good idea. Others have taken the more drastic action of fitting a Provent 200. Whatever you do I guess is ultimately up to you but given my Exy is leased and I'm getting all the servicing done by the dealer, I have no plans for a Provent and thus far (touch wood) I have not experienced the problem. My local Nissan dealer is excellent so I've decided to not fiddle with the car and just leave things be!

Re:

i'm very frustrated with my x trail

dealer says one thing joey says another. i'm inclined to believe joey.

okay new development in my lemon now.

1. inlet manifold leak, or inlet turbo hose. pissing oil down.
2. rear mail seal leak
3. provent is always full. i stopped measuring but my leggos pasta sauce jar is getting pretty full now.

theories - not sure if the piston rings haven't bedded in properly causing some blowby as full synthetic might be doing that. the hose is cracked but might be a small hairline so its hard to see. rear main leak might just appear to be a leak but may have come from the top, but the rear main is below and behind engine, turbo hose is top and in front.

Re:

update

dealer will look at the car on friday 7 am

nissan australia is aware of this and i have made a case number with them though not sure what that means. the lady i spoke to wasn't really helpful and i think she's going off a script, and she said i should not drive the car and get it towed via roadside assistance.

also they seem to indicate servicing with non-nissan dealer is bad joo joo??? *cough* restrictive trading *cough*

rear main seal is not leaking. the engine is breathing too much oil i'm losing liters per 5000 kms, and oil is weeping through major hoses before and after intercooler, around inlet manifold. wish me luck people!
