Jamie, on the forum trip to Woolgoolga the other t31 X-trails did not show much in the way of misalignment but a faint but noticeable rub mark was found along the tailgate!

Re:

Yeah Scot, I do not get any rubbing but there is a slight difference in the height of the plastic trim on the door and the back fender.

Only want it just for the records at this point in time.

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

My advice is that if you have a problem with a misaligned bumper then to report it to Nissan customer service so it is logged in their system. The dealers won't be involved in the repairs or the fix,as Nissan aust will have to organize the labour costs for the repairs.

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Hi Guys,

Nissan sent out the bulletin on this issue to all dealers yesterday (1/12) and it is bulletin number BT11-002 as I found out.

It basically doesn't say much at all, apart from asking the dealers to contact Nissan TechLine when a customer complains about the rear bumper misalignment and the Nissan TechLine will let the dealers know how to rectify this concern. The fix has been limited to T31 xtrails fitted with the Genuine Nissan Towbars only, so this means that any T31 owner who has an aftermarket towbar fitted will not be able to have the fix done I believe.

Oh, the dealers have been asked NOT to attempt the fix themselves before they contact the TechLine!

So much for the so called "great fix" which Nissan promised to share with us. Even the dealers are scratching their heads and trying to make sense out of this useless bulletin.

Re:

Here is the latest news on this issue about the misalignment .

From Nissan

Hi everyone, apologies for the delay from Friday. Firstly we wanted to say thanks for bringing your concerns regarding towbar fitment to our attention a few months ago now. We know it's taken a while to finalise, but there are different scenarios in which the fitment of the towbar could result in alignment issues for the bumper bar. In rectifying this we have taken the following actions – In early November we issued to all our Dealers, new fitting instructions for Genuine Nissan towbar on the Nissan X-TRAIL. We have also provided Dealers with a process to follow to work with us in rectifying any Genuine Nissan towbar fitting issues on the X-TRAIL. This was done to ensure that on a case by case basis they are corrected and that starts with them contacting us to describe the particular issue. We will support owners where the Genuine Nissan X-TRAIL towbar was fitted by a Nissan Dealer.

Talk about a kick in the guts from Nissan!

Regards Scot

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Hi all,

I've posted my view about this on their facebook page. I think this is a pretty average position for Nissan to take regarding this issue. emoticon

Did Nissan do their due diligence when they signed off on this tow bar or not? I purchased a genuine Nissan towbar (albeit I think made by Hayman Reese) and fitted it carefully following the instructions. In the words of one Nissan dealer employee when they checked my misalignment out at the 1000km "you've done a better job than we usually do". Probably explains why some dealer fitted tow bars show an even poorer fit than my car.

Anyway Nissan should just simply advise everyone what the problem is. That way even if the dealer won't help....we can probably correct the fault easy enough ourselves.

I really do think that Nissan should cover everyone affected though, certainly those with a Nissan genuine tow bar fitted by a dealer or owner fitted compliant with Nissan instructions. It may be a stretch to cover aftermarket tow bars but Nissan should at least offer the info on how to fix properly to those persons as well - maybe they can follow up with Hayman Reese or the shop they purchased it through.

Regards,

Paul.

Re:

I think Nissan Australia missed the point I raised more than a few months ago (27th of August, 2011) when I clearly asked them the following question:

quote:

Hi, Can the guys at the product development and testing team in Nissan Australia please advise how did they approve the fitment of the locally manufactured genuine Nissan towbar which is causing the rear bumper misalignment on ALL T31 X-TRAIL models currently fitted with the Nissan towbar? Every T31 X-TRAIL owner from 2007 to 2011 is reporting this rear bumper misalignment where the gap between the rear bumper and the tailgate edge is about 7mm on the left side and 2mm on the right side. This is causing the tailgate to rub on the bumper when opening and closing. The dealers are unable to correct this as the towbar is preventing the rear bumper from being aligned correctly. There needs to be a solution for this that can be communicated to all Nissan dealers as the owners and the dealers are currently at loss on how to fix this problem!

Nissan have to realize that they have approved the installation/fitment and sale of a Defective Product into the market, so this fact alone means that it doesn't matter if the towbar was fitted by a Nissan dealer or not, it would result in exactly the same fault.

Nissan would also have to admit that the Genuine Nissan towbar is manufactured locally by Hayman Reece I believe, which means that all Hayman Reece T31 towbars causing this problem would also need to be covered....maybe by Hayman Reece in such cases, but the directive on the defect to Hayman Reece needs to come from Nissan Australia.

Nissan Australia are still not saying what the actual fix is...

Re:

Hi Tim,

I would be interested to hear the following from you when this matter progresses further:

1. How long it's gonna take for the dealer and Nissan to respond.
2. What will be the actual fix of the problem and what would it involve.
3. How the dealer will treat the damaged parts (if any) that show signs of rubbing.
