Engine vibrating on idling

Dear Members

I myself is a member from India owning a cute x-trail 2005 model with a diesel engine 2.2 ltr with a 6 speed forward manual gear shift. Done almost 97500 kms done it is recent service with the local dealer for engine oil & filter replacement. I reported at the time of the check-in at the service centre there was a scratching voice coming from the wheels on rotation of wheels with the service advisor he advised to check the brake rotor and pads.

As per his report after on inspection he advised me to change the rotor and brake pads, the normal engine oil & filter replacement. After his advise I checked the service history with me in that I had notice that at 82000 kms i have already changed the brake pads with a new one with the brake disc also. so i informed him that and about the amount i had paid at that time with the same dealer, upon hearing that he advised to skin the rotor and replace the pads. No other way, since i agreed with him to do it accordingly for an amount of 320 US dollars and informed me to take delivery of the vehicle in two days.

As per his advise I called up to confirm the delivery after two days, he Informed me another new information about my x-trail which i was hearing it in my two years experience with my x-trail, It Was ""My car has gone to Safe Mode" waiting for a reply from Nissan Japan to get a unlock code. What is it ??????? please advise me.

After another four days the advisor informed me my vehicle is ready for delivery. Upon taking the delivery the brake complaint was almost okay. but i found my engine vibrating and shaking on idling, also the tyre rotation and vibration has increased in running even in neutral gear. please advise which area to be checked and diagnose.
thanking you, waiting for favourable replies.

Re:

Did you ask the mechanic to let you know why it has gone to safe mode and what they have done to cause this?

There is no such thing as "unlock code", they were just waiting for instructions on how to re-set the car back from whatever failure that happened while the car was with them (be it a sensor problem or a more serious turbo diesel problem) and this is exactly what they need to tell you.

Re:

Hi Dev,
Safe mode is the cars ECU going into a limp mode so the car can be driven to a dealer without causing any more damage.
I can't see the brakes triggering this off though.

Maybe the engine vibration caused Safe mode to come on in the first place.

I would be taking to the dealer and explaing this to them.

Good luck.

Re: Engine vibrating on idling

Hey Dev, love India, was in Mumbai recently.
Your prob could be a few things but get it all 'Reset' first. If that doesnt fix it and I doubt its the brakes triggered a Safe Mode.
Id be looking at
Crank and camshaft Sensors.
Engine Mounts cracked?
Knock Sensor - which if faulty will retard the engine a bit and itll shake a bit. Maybe.
Blocked Intercooler? PCV valve?
US Ebay has lots of Genuine Nissan Bits.

Ps. Ask the Nissan Mechanic what fualt codes it had in the Log. Ecu will store and OBD scan tool will show what was happening, even for a split second and no CheckEngineLight.

Good luck.

Re: Re:

Hi Jalal

Thanks for your comments, I have instructed the dealer to check what has gone wrong and give me more clarity on the complaints.

they have requested for further three more days to diagnose and repair it, I have given them the time, as per their comments they were telling might be the complaint is the engine mount bush or timing chain do you think that the timing chain is to be replaced in 98500 kms in odo.

In India especially here in Kerala there is only dealer so no other option for me go and depend on them make my vehicle run.

Any way thanks for your feedbacks and appreciating you and your team for running this great and useful site for all the xtrail owners.

thank you

Re: Engine vibrating on idling

Hi Dev, Im in Western Australia and times are earlier here than the Eastern States for Jalal,
Your mechanic has advised of two very different problems. I would definately start with replacing engine mounts as a timing chain replacement costs are huge. Buy yourself a stethescope and listen to the timng cover. It will make quite a rattle if its the chain. If it is rattling its probably the Tensioner.
Keep us all informed/ emoticon
Generally the Timiing Chain should never have to be replaced especially noy under 100 thousand. If it was a timing belt then maybe.

Re:

Hi Dev,

Engine vibration due to leakage of one of the engine mounts is a high possibility and we had T30 xtrails with shot engine mounts before, but that wouldn't cause the car to go into Safe Mode, so ask the dealer to make sure 100% that engine mount is leaking before replacing it and charging you more money!

Timing Chain doesn't need replacement at all as Scott mentioned.

As I said previously, I suspect they started the car with one of the sensors disconnected and that is why it has gone into safe mode, they need to tell you the error code that would have come-up when the safe mode got triggered.

Re: Engine vibrating on idling

Hii

Still my vehicle is with the Dealer I dont know what to do with them, Right now the dealer is telling me that I must replace the whole timing Assembly includes the chain / tensioner and the whole assembly, I dont know why because when I gave the vehicle to them for routine service there wasn't any sort of complaint reported by myself regarding the vibration of engine on idling, I have told them to give me back my vehicle in the condition which i dropped at your serviced centre. Anyway I have sent a complaint email to the Nissan India Guys tonite, hoping for a response here in our state hope these guys only know to change the whole unit they doesn't have proper training to go deeper inside identify, That's why they are doing the R & D on my CAR. I will upload the complaint details forwarded to Nissan India to all you my well wishers.
Thank you All

Re:

Sounds like a hopeless dealer to me and I wouldn't trust a word of what they're saying. They just wanna sell you parts and charge you a fortune for it!
