T31 Front Camber Fix

The other day a noticed a slight wobble in the front wheels above 100Kph, I had a look at the tires and the passenger side(left) was unevenly worn on the outside 25mm.

I took the car to get a wheel aliment and the mechanic explained that the camber should be -0.24' +/-0.30' and my wheels are right -0.28(good) left -1.07'(bad). He went to adjust the left and found it can't be adjusted, so recommended rotating the tires every 5000Km. I left unhappy and confused. I was thinking the X-trail must have camber adjustment, that's fairly important right?

The T31 service manual states.

CAUTION:
• Camber, caster, kingpin inclination angles cannot be adjusted.
• If camber, caster, or kingpin inclination angle exceeds the standard value, check front suspension parts for wear and damage. Replace suspect parts if a malfunction is detected.

An inspection by Nissan has found no faulty parts and they have also recommended the 5000 swap, still unhappy.

I did some googling and found a X-Trail front camber bolt kit. I have ordered one for $55 and will have it installed and adjusted by the local tire place. See how it works below.

I will post some results and pics when the job is done.

Re: T31 Front Camber Fix

If Left is -1.07 this means top of wheel is inclined towards centre of car ie -ve camber.

I would have thought this would lead to excessive wear on inside of tire if anything.

Negative camber is a good thing and helps handling.

Toe-in is the major issue with wheel alignment; 1 to 2 mm toe-in is correct and if yours is within this spec then you don't have a problem.

Most tires, in my experience, wear like you have described due to cornering wear and the solution is to NOT to speed around corners and so work the front tires' outer tread so hard. Sedate driving (easy acceleration, braking and cornering) is the go if you want good tire wear. Not much fun for some though!!!

If your wear on the outside is excessive then wheel alignment is of course needs to be looked at. Correct Toe-in should fix that problem anyway.

Your camber is actually within spec according to Jalaski's chart in following post except for Left to Right difference which is only slightly over (0.2degrees - bugger all).

I would say you DON'T have a camber problem. I would not fit the camber bolt. Last thing you would want to do is disturb factory tightened suspension bolts and nuts.

I would definitely get another wheel alignment guy to check things before modifying car if you are able. The guy you mentioned is obviously not familiar with the T31. It takes a very solid hit to move X-Trail alignment out - mine has been over some very rough terrain and hit the odd curb; still spot on!!!

Ensure Toe-in is 1 to 2 mm in at front and that's all you need to worry about emoticon

The best thing to do when taking your car for wheel alignment values is to print the factory wheel alignment and settings and show them to the tyre place. This will eliminate any doubt and any guesses. They can be found HERE

Re: T31 Front Camber Fix

Also remember that when you have you car wheel aligned it needs to be in STANDARD Trim.

ie
- Nothing in or on car that wasn't as from factory (no luggage/things, no extraneous things in storage compartments and glovebox)
- Fuel tank full and all fluids at normal levels.
- No-one sitting in car
- Tires at correct pressures.
- Spare tire and any factory tools in correct location.
etc

If your alignment was checked with anything heavy stored in car then alignment measurements would be incorrect!!!

Re:

LOL emoticon I wonder what we can store in our glovebox that could cause the alignment error....potential buyers of the T31 will now start to wonder if the T31 glovebox is truly THAT huge emoticon

Bwahahahaha!!!! emoticon

Seriously - people do the most unbelievable things; I had a large, heavy 6 volt GelCell stored in my glovebox as a spare for my Gold Detector so Ngahhhh!!!

This guy is/was going to replace a perfectly good suspension bolt for a camber adjusting one due to some "mechanic" saying his alignment was out - gotta look at everything obvious first.

He might have his glovebox full of lollies . . . . or a motor!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It happens . . . . .

Re:

I had a camber kit fitted to my I30 and a professional alignment done, the guy was great and has his own suggested specs which are better than factory settings, tyres now wear beautifully. He also knew the factory settings on my colorado would cause premature wear so sorted that out.

If theres no camber adjustment I'll be doing the same to my TL when it arrives. Dont assume factory specs are actually the best adjustments to make and dont assume people like your average tyer fitter know what they are doing with wheel alignment, the last "known tyre dealer" screwed up adjustments in both of my vehicles, hence why i sought out a guy who only does wheel aligments
