Engine won't start

The brains trust,

I need your help. My car will not start.

2003 T30 Xtrail - 179,000Kms, manual, stock everywhere else.

Symptoms - In past 6 weeks, car has not started 3-4 times whilst out and about. Waited a few minutes then started. However on Tuesday just gone it didn't start at all and hasn't since.

Testing - thought it was a battery issue so just changed it on spec,(had car 12months and unsure of battery age anyway). Changed out spark plugs because they were looking a little average anyway. Car is getting enough fuel as plugs are wet (but not too much). After researching here, checked ECU code and found P0335 - Crank angle sensor. Changed that out for a new one (new one has metal sensor barrel and plug rotated 180deg - genuine nissan). Nil start. Swapped out Camshaft sensor with removed Crank angle sensor, nil start. ECU reset and cleared code and still nothing yet.

Need your advice please - help. At the stage of taking it to an auto elec in town and fear getting ripped off. Too many dodgy mechanics have stuffed me around previously with other cars and crap diagnosis / $$$$.

Cheers

Both sensors need to be changed in your case (not just one).

Re: Re:

I was wondering, at $70 each just thought I may have gotten away with one. Is this something the nissan swap out together anyway?

Thanks for your forum, a wealth of information and pics to help out.

I was a lucky one to be able to reach the crank angle sensor without removing anything but the bracket to hold the loom that runs behind and below the intake manifold. Mind you I was standing on a milk crate.

Re: Re:

Both Crank and Cam sensors are now changed, nil start again. No new code on the ECU either. Do I start doing wiring checks now? Reset the ECU again?

Thoughts? If it is not sorted by Monday morning I have decided its off to the auto eleco.

Is it cranking at start-up at all or completely silent and dead?

Re: Re:

It is cranking but just fails to fire. After a few cranks it coughs like it wants to but just doesn't burst into life. But then after a few attempts I can smell fuel so give up.

Will pull spark plugs out again tomorrow and clean them up, will also leave them on the intake manifold and crank it over to see if they are actually sparking against the metal.

Then begins the wiring checks between sensors and computer. After that I have nothing to go with.

Re: Engine won't start

If you definately have fuel in the tank, and no fuel or air/ vacuum leaks in any pipework....

Spray some "start ya Btard" or carbie start into the air intake as you crank. (after the MAF sensor...take the rubber air intake of the throttle body and spray in there) If the car fires, and you have already changed the Crank and Cam sensors it may be a fuel fault (running E10 can cause faults. Possible fuel filter or injector fault)
With the Kms on your car it may be worth installing a new O2 sensor (bosch---supercheap or repco etc have them)....overfuelling can kill these pretty quick.
Check the battery and vehicle earths as well....

joys of modern cars...could be anything emoticon or a temperamental connection somewhere

do the TPS reset and the engine idle relearn as well

Not much help, but its somewhere else to look emoticon

Re: Engine won't start

Ended up taking the car to Nissan dealer in town, no time to delay any further.

Called me this afternoon with following comments: "did a quick look over the basics and didn't find anything. Connected diagnostic computer and found a few error codes and cleared them. Car started first and every time afterwards."

Now I cleared the ECU so this must be somewhere or with something else?

Also commented that "once you changed the Crank and Cam sensors it should have still started and gone into basic mode".

Anyways will pick up car tomorrow after they try with cold starts and all will be good again. Just hope it goes back to totally reliable again.

Anyone know if they hook up a scan gauge or something similar to diagnose errors further?

Cheers.

Re:

Sounds promising but too simple a fix.
Fingers crossed.
The scan gauges will only tell you what the error code is not any other information unfortunayely.
Not sure what Nissan ones do.

Re: Engine won't start

Scanguage will also reset the error codes...a bit easier than doing the "push accelerator 7 times etc" trick. Provided, of course, that the original fault has been repaired...definately helps in locating the area of the initial fault though.
